Buying new SSD

Hi Bros,

I just upgraded my motherboard and processor to a i5-4570.
Have to say the performance jump from Q9400 to i5-4570 wasn't really obvious.

Looking to upgrade my storage to boot from an SSD, with 2 harddisk as files each mirroring one another for backup purposes.

Last year when i was looking for a potential SSD, i was told to consider the Intel 520. My budget is below 200 for around 128gb.

Can the bros here recommend me some SSD for me to consider?
I am currently looking at the following models:
1. Plextor M5P 128GB (Is this the extreme version on PCTheme pricelist?)
2. Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB
3. Crucial M500 120GB

topup another $50~60 for M5S 256gb, double the size of 128gb and speedy too.

As @jnetsix mentioned, you can probably consider the 256GB SSDs as they will probably be sufficient for a longer time.

I need to be very frugal with my usage of my 120GB SSD as it isn't a lot actually. I'm intending to get a 256GB soon. The prices are quite attractive now.

Intel, crucial, corsair, plextor, samsung are quite well-known for some of the models, depending on buyer budget and buy accordingly.

i'm tempting to get 1 more SSD for common files storage as the speed is very attractive, but due to recent price increase of nand chips, all rams/SSD/thumbdrive prices went up in april and has dip slightly this mth.

Yea now to think of it actaully 128GB a bit limiting now.. One game already 10 over GB.
Recently my GFX Card also spoil so now using haswell built in gfx card..
Spending 300dollars on an SSD a bit xiong.

Think i need to consider again or maybe wait SSD price to drop further.

Personally, I think there is little reason to get an SSD for storage purpose. Likely you won't feel much difference. Even with a 512GB SSD, most of my data still goes into my mechanical drive. Only frequently used application and games are installed on my SSD.

True that games takes up quite a fair bit of space. So I do recommend no less than a 240 to 256GB SSD. Usually the price/GB value is better on the bigger sized SSDs.
Otherwise, you can still get a 128GB SSD, but you will need to manage disk usage well. So games you don't think you will play, then get rid of it from your drive, or don't bother installing it.

using lightroom to preview and edit the files there will be a difference.
depends on the application that i want to use, else you are right there isn't much difference to mechanical drive.

Lightroom always very slow to preview RAW files for me. Like i change to next photo then it will blur for quite some time then start showing the full res picture. SSD also will like that?

I am thinking of transfering to SSD to edit, then export processed photos to harddisk.

You can try to set preview to 1:1 during import options. By having catalogs n photos in ssd will help to speed up.
When transferring processed photos to normal hdd, yr bottle neck is at the normal hdd.

If you are considering the 250GB range, I think personally I will get the EVO 250GB and its price is roughly the same as Plextor M5P 256GB.

Poison you a little more, check out Amazon's price for EVO 500GB (Amazon.com: Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE500BW: Computers & Accessories). Even if you pay for the GST (shipping to Singapore is free for now), you will still have savings compared to Comex price. Downside will be the warranty.
