Is Caller Number Display/ Caller ID needed if your phone already have friend's "A" number added into your phonebook. Will the caller name be displayed when friend "A" call, even if you dont have Caller Number Display /Caller ID?

I will try to post something useful and help to answer your question.

If you are referring to the "Caller ID" service provided ( for free or monthly fee depending on your mobile plan ) by the local telcos. This allows you to see the number of the person who is calling you regardless the number is stored in your phone memory.

The exception is when the caller subscribes to telco service called " Caller Number Non-Display " or Private Number. You will not be able to see it even if you have the Caller ID.

YES! Unless yours is a prepaid SIM.

So long as you want to know what number (or name, if you've that person in your Phone Book) is calling you, you've to pay the $5.

Exception, perhaps, would be some Corporate Individual accounts, where Caller ID and Auto Roaming subscription charges are waived.

For your comment, I agree that this is bread and butter of having a mobile phone yet the telcos charge it as "VAS" their postpaid customers to make even more money. Imagine 1 million postpaid customers, everyone subscribes to caller ID VAS... that's S$ 5 million ADDITIONAL revenue on top of their advertised plan prices. Why would the telco do anything to lose it?

A lot of people seem to misunderstand caller ID, thinking they can unsubscribe from it as long as they have their friend's number in their phone book.

Think about this. When your friend calls your phone number, how does your mobile phone start ringing? The telco sends a signal to your phone, like "hey phone, telco here.. you should start ringing now because someone is calling your owner".

If you subscribed to caller ID, your telco will also tell you phone, "btw, that someone's number is +6592345678". Your phone will look up this number in your phonebook. If it finds it, then it shows you the name, like "Friend A".. otherwise it just shows the number only.

BUT if you didn't subscribe to caller ID, your telco will keep quiet about the caller's number. Since your phone doesn't know who is calling, it will just say "someone is calling. I don't know who because the telco didn't tell me. I'll just say 'Unknown number' or 'Private number'".

Now, the phone may have your friend's number stored as "Friend A" contact name. Or it may not have it at all. The thing you should understand is this: Unless the telco tells your phone who that someone is, your phone cannot know who it is, so it can't magically tell you that "Friend A" is calling.

Takeaway point: Your phonebook cannot replace caller ID, but rather complements it. With just caller ID, you will only get your friend's number on screen. With both caller ID and phone book, your phone can also show your friend's name on screen (usually along with the number). With just the phone book, nothing is shown on screen when your friend calls. But you can easily call him by looking up his name in the phone book.

One final thing: This would normally be the case with most of your friends. But maybe one of your friends is a paranoid privacy-freak who does not want his number to be shown to everyone he calls. So he subscribes to another VAS called "Caller number non-display". In this case, even if you have subscribed to caller ID, you won't see this particular friend's number/name on your phone screen when he calls. This is because he subscribed to this VAS and so the telco will not tell your phone what the caller's number is when he is calling you. Since your phone doesn't know, it will again show Unknown or Private.

Conclusion:

For you to see the caller's number on your phone screen, BOTH of these must be true:

• You have subscribed to Caller ID VAS
• The caller has NOT subscribed to Caller number non-display VAS

In addition to the above, if you have stored the number in your phonebook (contact list) with a name for it, your phone will also tell you the name (according to the phonebook).

I know singtel got about 20% off combo 1&2 but combo 1 data is 100mb...may as well dont give... and combo 2 is over my budget. M1 has a 500mb added on top for your 300mb. So is 800mb in total. But If I want the CallID, it will over my budget ($30)...

Afaik, without Caller Number Display / Caller ID, it's always unknown number. Because of that, TrueCaller won't know what's the number too. Same for Samsung Smart Call.

The other point on these type of Apps on ability to show you the name of the caller by means of;

The internet directory listing database.

These Apps will search based on availability in these internet directory database.
Once found it give you the name to the number.

This is one method most scammer used in order to send you those messages &or calls as to scam or advertise their services.

Facebook is one the main issue where most include their contact numbers.

It is that someone who do not want to let others know when contacting you.

If they want to they can add a prefix in-front of your telephone number before dialing.
In this way, it will show their phone number if you have Caller-ID.

They do have to pay for this service to have this VAS Caller Non-Display.

Actually hoh. If you use whatsapp to msg and call, then I dont need caller id. IMO, Caller ID should be part of a basic service that our telcos should provide. I have switched over to Circle. It is foc.
