I never thought much about this... but is legislation the reason why we have landcruisers in Singapore with the pesky unremovable 3rd row? When I was shopping for an SUV, I was actually looking for something large without the 3rd row - or even a removable 2nd row so I could use it to move bulky things.
Wah, planning to drive across Asia/Europe like that Jeremy guy?

Yes, it's mainly due to legislation.

When the cars are registered, the number of seats are recorded. Car dealers can make the some seats foldable/stowable, but they want to avoid any potential hassles with removable seats when the authorities raise questions.

There's some safety concerns as well. I suspect they do not trust every single car owner to re-attach removable seats properly. In a crash, if the seats fly off and passengers gets hurt, sure will have a lot of paperwork, investigations, lawsuits etc.

I think VW managed to get their Buzz's removable 3rd row seats homologated by LTA somehow.

So which car did you end up buying that met your requirements?

Just be aware that attaching a vehicle to a SP can attract serious legal trouble if the vehicle gets into a serious accident and lawsuits are raised.
Hmmm I smelling in insights here.

So if accident it is the sp or entity that is at risk and not the driver?

In the majority of cases, what's the difference between sp and driver?

liability against owner of the van usually I think, so if company, can declare bankrupt and bye, till the insurer go and try another claim against the driver?

but if against SP, confirm claim till SP is bankrupt etc.

Thats my point, most of the time the driver of a sp registered van is the sp himself.
