Without eating the insects, they are just like any other plants out there relying on sunlight and water ?

Venus flytraps can survive without insects, but they will not thrive as well as they would if they were able to consume them ¹ ² ³. Venus flytraps can produce their own food through photosynthesis, but they need nutrients like nitrogen, which they can get from insects ¹. Venus flytraps can survive for two to three months without eating insects, but they need to eat at least once or twice a month to stay healthy ².
