I previously booked a single room for my solo trip to Kyoto next year March. Then, plans changed and I needed to get a twin room instead. However, I am still holding on to the single room as I was waiting for a good rate before canceling my booking. But, JPY has dropped from my rate of 12.60 to 11.1 now! Should I wait longer and hope the rate will go up? I'm losing more than $50. :(

Hotels.com do allow name change. Should I get online and look for somebody to take over my room instead? Besides this Kyoto one, I have another in Tokyo. But the amount is smaller and I would not so heart pain about it. :s11:

yen likely to drop further till next year. maybe wait for the election next mth first and see how?

an alternative, possible for your travel partner to book and stay in another single room?

but if the savings from sharing a twin room is more significant, then lose the $50 ba.

The savings from a twin room definitely a lot more. I was so excited planning a solo trip. I was stalking the ibis Kyoto prices every day till they opened the dates I wanted. Ended up with a rate of 14,000 yen per night during peak sakura season. But, having a travel partner does lower the hotel costs. Ended up with APA hotel 19,000 yen for two pax. Savings 4500 yen per night.

I guess I just have to wait till end of the year. Hope the rates will go up slightly that I would not lose too much. Need to refund back over 50,000 yen.

If you don't mind the hassle, call the bank and speak to the cso to get them to refund the difference. Since you haven't used the service yet, just say you made the booking at the wrong date or something.. be prepared to call and remind them multiple times and do it before your statement comes...

Hope it helps.

Eh... She can get back her 50k yen assuming no room cancelation charge but it's not going to worth the 50k yen in sgd she paid previously.

Unless, you are saying the bank will refund the difference lost (sgd$75 assuming 50k yen already paid) due to the current exchange rate dropping from 12.6 to 11.1? Please tell me which bank has such service.

The only time I managed to get a bank to waive off the exchange difference was when the transaction and refund are both on the same day due to an error made by the clerk. As my prepaid room was made earlier this year, I do not think DBS is willing to give me back the difference. Got any other possible ideas?

Perhaps to make you feel better, many of us on this forum has booked out trips to Japan this winter at the same rate as you back in June this year. So if we all have waited until now, we would have saved more than 10% off our accommodation cost. But as we all know, if we didn't book earlier, there might not be any vacancies left if we book now when the rate is better. But who knows, it must just happen that all of us can still get one of the last remaining room even if we booked today. So technically, all of us have booked early to "insure" our accommodation bookings.

Take it that the $50 was your insurance premium and you will probably feel better...

Well, I either have to consider it as insurance or just a reminder that I am not good with forex and should be careful if I ever want to invest in it. :p

Truth be told, not many of us are good at FOREX. Who would have thought an already 5 years low exchange rate is now called a 7 years low? :D

Tell u guys a joke.. I pay for my ski rental, ski pass and bus transfer last Thursday for a total of Jpy 41,750. 2 days later I received an email from the company that they had revised the rates lower and will be refunding the difference. Which is Jpy 1,400, I was in initially happy at the goodwill of the company. However I received an sms tat my card has been charged the revised amount. I called up the rental company and they told me they had to give a full refund and New charge. So I ended up paying $11 more than the original amount. How retarded.

Citibank?
Previously Amazon had refunded me my transaction for items which were lost during shipping. There was a difference of maybe $5 sgd due to exchange rate difference. It took some time, but they did give me a refund...

Then again, that transaction was in USD...

i usually will not book those accommodations that requires upfront payment, coz i prefer to pay cash when i am there. most of the hotels available on booking.com only require credit card for confirmation, but they do not charge to the credit card. hotel chains like Toyoko-Inn also dun need u to pay upfront

Ah no hotels.com requires you to pay full with your credit card when you place your booking.

You may cancel your booking with full refund in SGD if you cancel at least 14 days before your trip.

Booking.com doesn't require full upfront payment.

My problem arise because I paid in JPY last time. I noticed that hotels.com have different room options when you toggle between SGD and JPY. If I had paid in SGD, then there will be no problem at all. But, I dont like using SGD as that is using their exchange rate.

And, I used hotels.com instead of booking.com cause they always have this 10% discount code.

there are hotels that requires the credit card to be charged upon booking. even those listed on booking.com, some required immediate payment.
