Can't connect to the internet

Hi guys, not really sure which sub-forum this question belongs to, but i'm not sure where the problem is originating from. I'm a noob at tech so please excuse my (stupid?) question

i'm currently staying in uni hall. i bought a router to connect to the ethernet socket. with this, my wifi is working fine. i then bought another lan cable and an ethernet usb adapter to connect the router directly to my MacBook Air, but I'm unable to use the direct internet connection. only the wifi is working. how am i able to solve this?

is the ethernet adapter an original one from apple?

have you installed the required drivers if any?

perhaps u can navigate to network utility.app and see if ur system can recognise the adapter and indicated the link rate.

if you need further help, you need to approach your hall IC or your IT department of the school for immediate assistance..

i bought it from challenger. it is dlink dub-1312 usb 3.0 gigabit ethernet adapter, which i think should work

there is a disc for the adapter but my MacBook Air doesn't have any disc player :/ I searched online for the driver but its only for mac os 10.6-10.9. mine is 10.10. i tried downloading it anyway but the .dmg file won't run :/

can't really approach anyone for help because by right not supposed to use router..

Why don't you use an Apple original thunderbolt to ethernet adapter? That doesn't require any driver installation and works via plug and play. I'm 99% sure its the adapter that's giving you problems now.

You actually dont need a router

You can connect the LAN to your macbook and get it share internet.

with that said, have you tried to connect directly using the adaptor and the lan cable to the original point?

Try the file in the first link of this website, it might help. I had a similar issue with my USB to Ethernet adapter for my MBA and this helped to solve it.
