Casing matters?

I got the Palit GTX970 recently and I am using TJ11 casing. For time being, the side panels are open. But when I played the game, NFSMW, the temp still below 60 and the fan didn't spin at all! I still got other game to try, if the temp never exceed 60, meaning my casing helps a lot.
