Certificate more important or work experience?

So im from a media course and I'm about to finish my final semester. Then I head to army where I get locked in for 2 years... Should I bother taking a Degree or just go straight to work and get experience? Experience more important or cert more important?

Take a degree first. Certificate is important and it's only a few tears vs your whole working life of about 40 years.

Certificate is more important than work experience. For example if you want to work in public sector like SAF, you will mostly retired at non-graduate scheme like Warrant Officer even if you are doing a graduate job like Officer as a PC and OC. Can see the different in salary package between a CPT and 2WO doing the job of a PC or OC.

I asked a senior management in my company the same question.

His reply to me was:

You take 4 years for a degree, you are a fresh grad.

Guy B worked after his diploma, he have 4 more years of experience than you.

But in 40 years time, you will have Bachelor degree with 40 years experience
Guy B have a Diploma 44 years experience.

Do you think the 4 years extra experience matters alot?

He didn't tell me the answer. He also asked me to compare the position/salary/potential when both a degree n diploma holder at 50 or 60 years old.

I agree! Life is too short - its not all about working experience and money. Go to university and it will be an experience that youll never able to get again in the future! (Trust me, no matter how hard uni is, many of my senior graduates still misses school when they join the workforce. Im y2 nus ddp student so i can ascertain uni life wont be an easy journey but it will bring you many opporunuties!)

ya. plus MOST jobs that u see, wont say, " preferably 4 years work experience , minimally o level diploma".. if diploma, most likely is entry level job,no experience rquired

most will says, "preferably 4 years work experience with minimally degree"

If you want to want to go far in the longer term get a degree. If you want to go fast in the shorter term, accumulate work experience.

media course during ur army that time try to up ur portfolio as much as u can and make connections since that's how ur industry works. different industries different expectations. go to jobstreet and see the requirements for the roles.

best is to have a degree. so maximise the time in army to find out what u want and to expand ur portfolio and connections as fast as u can.

it depends on what kind of certificate u r talking about here. Professional certificates may be more valuable than a degree certificate.

I’m a poly grad and my pay is 2.2k. I have colleagues who are private Uni grads who have same pay as I do. Now I don’t know if my decision to sign up for Uni is a wrong one.

Don’t regret, always good to have that extra qualifications. Nothing can beat experience but that paper will prove to be useful.
