Hi,

just want to share my experiences at Challenger Funan at to confirm my doubts with you tech savvy bros and sis out there.

My sister purchased a Lenovo U41-70 laptop recently with the mentioned specs (i7-5500U, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT940M 2GB Dedicated). I feel that the specs is good for the average user, along with the dedicated graphics should be able to handle most games with ease, with normal to low settings. Apparently there was an issue that the laptop starts to lag (3-15fps) on games she played such as GTA 5, Saints Row 4, Left 4 Dead 2. Probably felt that might be a driver issue, I updated the drivers and the issue persisted. So I asked her to get a replacement.

So the staff at Challenger actually implied that the laptop is not suitable for gaming, and only GTX. Hello? There's a GT940M 2GB DEDICATED NVIDIA for god's sake. Why did they even put it there in the first place? For you to watch movies? There's already an Intel Graphics 5500. I myself am using a middle-end laptop with a GT740M 2GB, and is able to play GTA 5 with about 40fps(I'm satisfied).

Logically, the GPU should be able to play these games even at low settings with ease right? The 3-15fps is just plain ridiculous?

Just want to share my experiences and confirm my doubts. Thank you.

You might want to check under Power Options in Control Panel to make sure that the laptop isn't throttling itself performance wise to increase battery life(regardless of whether you're plugged into wall socket or not).

shouldnt have anything to do with graphics card..

i agree. check the power options is set to high performance .. not balanced or anything. happens to me too when i play games and forgot that i'm on power saving mode..

Yup. I checked and made sure that it is running at High Performance as well.

The fix for me now is changing the resolution. The laptop has a high DPI display with recommended resolution of up to 1920x1080. I changed it to 1366x768 in games and is able to run it at high settings perfectly without lag. Probably the NVIDIA card is not strong enough to even game at 1920x1080 I guess.

Don't sound right.
The GT940 should be good enough. How is your 3D benchmark tests with the GT940? Do you experience any sudden lag?
If normal 3D tests are fine, then it should be drivers compatibility issues.
A buggy driver can affect performance by up to 50% for gaming.

Maybe you can try the drivers from nVidia website directly?
