Changing from smu to ntu?

Hi,I study one semester in smu.And i am barely coping and end up breaking down most of the time.Hence i am deciding to transfer to NTU hss.But the intake is next year so i am hesitating if i should continue one more semester in SMU or just go out and work first while waiting for next intake.
If i were to continue for this semester,this means i hve no subsized tuition grant for a year.This means i have to pay 27k plus for one year in ntu.So remaining 3 years,i only pay tt 7 or 8k.Plus,i need to repay my smu one year school fee(10.7k).This means i have to pay 27k+(3*8k)+10.7k=ard 61k?

Any one transfer from one uni to another?Can give me some advices?Thank you.If the fees is too high,i may just stick here and suffer.

I had Fren changed from nus to ntu. But not sure Abt tuition grant though. Anyway what makes u think u can survive ntu if u ain't coping any well wif Smu? Maybe U should take some time to confirm what you really want during this sem break

agree. You should just sort things out within SMU. transferring school isn't going to solve anything.

what subject is TS studying in SMU? from what i know, the pace in SMU tends to be very intensive and very project-based, which requires a lot of time and effort and group work. some arts/social science subjects in NUS and NTU tend to have less project/group work but require more self-reading (but of course it differs from course to course). if one's character is not inclined towards the very fast-paced and groupwork kind of environment, switching to another kind of course may indeed be better. but i think perhaps if TS can provide more details, fellow brothers and sisters in the forum could better advise.

I think it is better for you to call NTU admission office to enquire about the tuition grant issue and the chances of changing course. If they are going to forfeit your first sem tuition grants, then it is better to quit now.

sorry, can't advise you on the fees. maybe better to check the NTU website or send the admissions office an email.

just one suggestion, not sure if u have considered transferring to the SMU social sciences faculty instead, the course sounds interesting also. or perhaps you can see if it's possible to transfer to the SMU soc sci faculty for one sem, while waiting for your NTU school year to start. in that way, u may be able to gain credits for some courses which can be brought over to NTU.

arts/soc sci modules usually come with lots of readings, sometimes as many as 5-10 readings each week per module. a reading could be smth like as journal articles or book chapter, these are commonly 20-40 pages long each. if u strongly dislike this kind of thing, it might be quite a torture to study. but project work tends to be lesser.

i doubt you can just transfer. you have to withdraw from current course and then apply for the course you want to do. of cos u will have to be able to meet the entry requirements for the course you gonna apply to.

Even with the retrenchments (which are mostly in finance IT, there are still other areas which are doing well), the job prospects for IT is still better than a language grad.

Hi, i am also in a similar scenario like you. I was from TP Mechatronics but went to Fass intending to major econs for 2 mths and realise i am neither a arts person nor analytical enough and i withdraw. The reason i withdraw early because of tuition grant issue also. I plans to go back engineering in NTU next yr and if i enter to any local u, i will not have any subsidised rate for one of the semsester. since i have a diploma i would rather use the 8 mths to work and save more money and prepare earlier for that new course

go 2 times interview for smu IT this year also nv get in...worst is there are only 3 of us in second round and i'm the middle performer in the coding "challenge"...still can't believe they only choose 1 person out of 3.

I prefer seminar-style lectures as students get to interact more with the professors. For NUS and NTU, beside mass lectures and tutorials, students tend to self-study a lot and clear their doubts through various mediums available to them (Books, Internet etc), as a result, they become more independent and resourceful. I am not saying that SMU students are not, it is just that they have more opportunities to clarify their doubts during lesson time as classes are smaller in size and there are more interaction time with the professors.

Most ppl end up doing jobs that has completely no link from what you studied in uni. Based on that, I would advice that you remain in SMU and focus in completing your degree instead of being distracted about 'should I move somewhere'.

That is of course unless you are very passionate about some other courses. But the fact that you even have to ask shows that you are not very passionate in NTU courses also.

Pls do note that ntu learning pace ain't slow either. So weigh ur options well
