Below $200 per night? Try airbnb ba. I previously stayed at one opposite mark city which was about 3 mins walk from shibuya JR station. Just need to cross a small road and it's sheltered to the station. The apartment was quite big for a room in Tokyo. PM me if you're interested in that listing and I'll let you know which one is it.

Last year June trip, I stayed at 3 different hotel in Tokyo, 2 budgets and 1 mid range -as per followed

1 - Tokyu Stay Higashi Ginza abt SGD 114 - only one reason to stay here, 5 mins walk to Tsukiji Fish Market, go tuna auction at 5am, have washing machine and dryer in room itself

2 - Khaosan Tokyo Kabuki abt SGD 40 - Just beside Sensoji Temple, very quiet, 4 per room, bunk beds, clean and good, low price, have lifts to each floor

3 - Khaosan Ninja Branch abt SGD 38- 12 cabin per room, cabin with individual lock per cabin, Very convenient, near train and metro, easy to go all places, straight train to Narita Airport, super super friendly staff, my fav of all 3 hotels, but, stayed 5th floor, no lift, tired climb stairs

All booked from Agoda, hope this helps

I would recommend Tsukuba Hotel which is about a 10minutes walk from the Ueno station. It's also just 1 traffic light away the Inaricho station on the Ginza line which Tokyo Metro operates.

It's 4400yen per night and it helps if you have a student card as you can get student discount (then it becomes 3300yen per night). Perfect for solo travellers lolz. Rooms come with your own shower facilities. =)

Usually I book directly from their website:

$200 per night gives you a lot of options even in Tokyo. How many people going? Kind of hard to give recs without knowing how many pax for that amount.

If it's 4pax, can consider Oimachi and Kamata area business hotels. Can go as low as 3000yen/night/pax for twin rooms for a proper new clean hotel. Super close to Haneda airport.

If 2 pax, can upgrade to business hotels in Ikebukuro area.

Some hotel are not open for booking until it's 3 months before actual dates. Some earlier. Some have exclusive arrangement with online booking portals, etc, so it differs.

If its Tokyo, just be as near as possible to those key transport hub. Eg Tokyo stn, Ueno, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku etc. If you cannot get any near these few, then at least try to be near a Yamanote stations. They are the second best options.

Imo Tokyo trains are so extensive, no need to stay along yamanote line. For me it's okay as long as you don't stray too far from the yamanote circle, and there is major subway such as ginza line near your location. Base on ur budget would recommend hostel instead of hotel. K house is good.
