Hi guys, I've looked at several models but would like to know what are the best value for money or cheapest 17" (preferred) or 15.6" laptop with local warranty?

The most important criteria is the Gen 8 CPU and preferably 8GB of RAM for normal office work.

Thanks!

Keep a lookout for the model on Qoo10 during those super sale periods. Last I help me colleague got a deal there for 748 after all the coupon discounts. Very good deal for the specs, although the downside are the slow hard drive and TN monitor.

Wow, $748 is a good deal, unfortunately Acer has marked up the price.

That $748 Acer is still available at Harvey Norman. Forget about Acer as you may have to keep bringing it for repair.

My experience and observation is different though. I have seen quite a number of Acer laptops making it pass 3 years, a couple still functioning after almost 5 years.

To be objective, you will not find a 100% fail proof brand. I have used brands that sent me to their service center 1 time every half a year. I used it for 1.5 years and trade it away to save myself the headache.

That 900+ price is the usual price. Only when there is some kind of super sale will you find the price being lowered, and you can use coupons to make it cheaper. Unfortunately, I am not sure if Qoo10 will every release a 100 or more coupon for less than 1000 bucks now, so the next best coupon is 50 bucks off.

Yeah but it's selling at $800+.

By the way, is the DDR3 ram (E15 E5-576G-52GR(BLK)) a big problem compared to a model with DDR4?

Intel chips are less sensitive to memory speed. I don't know what is the frequency of the DDR3, but if it's 1866 which I suspect so, it will be quicker than a baseline DDR4 2133. Frequency is not everything as the latency increase on DDR4 nullifies the advantage.

I still see it for $748 at Harvey Norman (old model with HDD only) but i think you are right that the overall specs is a bit too low end. It is just DDR3 so it is slower. The processor is only 3.5Ghz instead of 4 Ghz and it is i5 instead of i7. The graphic a bit low end too. Today almost everyone is using SSD and yet it is using HDD. The notebook is really a bit behind time. I suggest getting a higher end model. SSD also has different speed, some read/write speed are slower while some are faster.

You can easily upgrade the HDD to a SSD on your own... or take it to one of those shops in SLS to get it done... then your cheap laptop will really fly... I bought a couple of the Acer E15s with i5 processors and upgraded them to SSDs... they really fly now... just make sure you have at least 8GB RAM... take advantage of those PC shows and get free upgrades to 16 GB RAM...

Not with this 1st gen8.

1st Gen 8 i5 mobile n gen 8 i7 mobile all is 4c8t, so almost no diff unless you gian the 2mb extra cache n few hundred mhz speed. In fact, this 1st Gen 8 i5 machiam like a slower version of i7 mobile hq gen 7, the highest tier of gen 7 i7 mobile

And mx150 is ok lah, it is really a capable 1080p part for light gaming. Unless really need gaming, then advise to look at those with gtx 1060.

Imo, just take the cheapest i5 with mx150 if u die die have to get this. Else, wait for mobile ryzen or the 2nd gen8 with 6c12t.

Mx150 is a bit too low end and only 2Gb GDDR5, it is not as good as Gtx960m 4Gb GDDR5. Overall this notebook quite low end. Still can use because it is cheap.
