We went Chengdu Sichuan last year during CNY. Booked flights at e yha hostel we stayed at Chengdu, e flights delayed for more than 5 hrs due to snow fall at e JZG airport which happens very often, according to the locals.

Better and cheaper alt is by coach:

We stayed inside e jzg valley home stay in this Tibetan uncle's place, it's supposed to be illegal but turned out many Chinese locals would choose to stay a nite:

He offers simple room, but the hot water not working so din take shower (furthermore I had slight altitude sickness - bad headache during dinner, so rest early)

JZG is very easy to navigate, no need tour package, if you want to fly, can look out for the Ctrip discounted fares online (book from the Chinese site coz e English site's rates are higher)
Note: actually via air, u dun really save alot of time if flight delay. You also need to navigate out from airport to JZG valley entrance, many private taxi will tout tourists, need to bargain & share w others (u hv to approach others if just 2 of u). I hv contact of e driver who drove us back to Chengdu. 王彪 13795798743. Rates wise better check online w local Chinese, of course must bargain la.

For accommodation outside the park entrance (walking distance), we stayed at this yha, booked online w/o any deposit, it has Tibetan style newly-wed suite (double bed & attached bath).

From JZG to Chengdu, can take cab RMB1000, 4 pax share, 7 hours.
Travel eastwards, cuts thro the heart of worst earthquake striken area..See a lot of reconstruction and reinforcements.

The fare covers his 1 day's room/rest in Chengdu, and empty cab back..(hard to hv quick contact for journey back, uless enuff lobangs). Can also travel westwards, about 7-8 hours, but less scenic.

mentioned earlier: (dep. on yr budget and time)

1. Coach 10 hrs - RMB200,
2. plane (1 hr + 1 hr cab) RMB500 + RMB500 (cab from airport to JZG)
   (rmb500 plane, camp on chinese website for last min flight promos, need agent to book, no intl ccard)
3. Cab 7-8 hrs - RMB1000 for 4 in cab (need contact)

Accdm:

• Old ****, Stay within NP tribal house, private room/common toilets+dinner+breakfast rmb100+ per head (for nostalgia/authencity), (need contact), or
• New ****, stay in 5-stay hotel (sheraton, etc), 3-4 km from JZG NP.

U din read the earlier posts or other threads.
Only way is to stay in the tribal house, then u can roam after the tourists left with tranquility and freedom. Rangers ask just say, staying in ah gong's house. No secrets or fear bat it.
(though on paper, it's not allowed- world heritage site)
The park rangers are ah gong's son and family friends.
But ah gong expect all to have dinner at 7pm, an authentic xp.
Btw, the house is concrete not attap...with bed warmers, aircon.

Recommend this Chengdu hostel - Dreams Travel, located directly opposite a few attractions- Wuhouci & Jinli, a busy street with loads of food & tourists.
