Songthaew is cheap (no air con), if there is one happen to near you, can hire it. Price is 30baht per person, if more person can negotiate with the driver.

@roborovsky
Did you hire a private driver during your trip? I'm looking for 1, for a day trip, a car will be better. Usually private driver cum van, too big for 2 person.
@Andrew
Are you looking for a private driver?
Sending you a PM. Please check. Thanks

4) if you are planning to drive around mountain region like Pai, Mae Hong Son etc with party of 3 and more, please rent a 2.0 sedan (e.g Camry) at minimum for the required power.

One of our rental car - 1.6 Nissan slyphy could barely go up the mountainous routes and need to disable the aircon.

Not true. More likely you are on auto gear and did not switch to Low gears
I’m driving a Honda City 1.0L turbo (equivalent to 1.6L) and have no problem at all, including Doi Ang Kang which has steeper slopes compared to Mae Hong Somg and Doi Inthanon

Ban Rak Thai is definitely worth visiting.
Can’t say the same for Pang Ung (but that’s just my personal opinion).
It’s nearby to Ban Rak Thai hence no harm swinging by

I haven't go Chiangmai yet, currently planning for my trip in Jan 2023.
Reading and watching alot on Chiang mai.

For 4-8 person, I think it's better to hire a driver cum car or van. Or rent a car or van, if the driving person got experience in driving mountain road. Doi Suthep road still ok but Doi Inthanon should be a challenge.

Songkran is ang mo favourite. Old City and river side hotel or airbnb should be ang mo best staying area.
Nimman road area is popular with chinese tourist, so I think this area should be less affected.
I also read Nimman is on the fight path when the flight take off. Last flight is around 6pm local time.
When I was choosing hotel and airbnb, I read the reviews. Few places are badly affected, but not all are affected. Nimman area has alot of resident house and condo. University is nearby.
Btw I pick airbnb LIV@NIMMAN Condo, only 1st floor airbnb available but with pool access. In soi 2, about 10 mins walk to One Nimman.
Saw AirAsia setup new flights from Feb but no price drop.
Eyeing a places near Santitham and the stretch between Nimman and old city.
Probably going to rent a car 60-120/day, cheaper than tour and can visit the more ulu recommended foodie places.
Interested in hearing how your trip goes(y)

Is there any water theme parks in Chiang Mai near (less than 30mins taxi trip) to Shangri-La? Planning a trip during March school holidays. Anyone stays at Shangri-La Chiang Mai before?

I have not been to CM so far and wanted to visit there. Been to BKK many times already and wanted to go northern side for a change.

Hi, for those who will be traveling to Chiangmai soon, I was there last week. The weather is cooling but not cold. Unless you are looking to travel to Chiangrai or the mountains, I don't think there's a need to pack anything more than a jacket.

Was thinking of this question too, thanks.
City area - I think normal T shirt will do.
Mountain - add jacket, maybe add long pant
I'm going late Jan, wondering when is the coldest time.

I think end dec to mid jan could be colder, i asked the locals they say this year not as cold.

in terms of markets and shopping malls these are the ones i think are good

1. Jing Jai weekend market (morning): good selection of local produce and handicrafts, food, chill vibes
2. Ba Pao Flea Market (day): coconut plantation converted to market, smaller scale compared to Jing Jai
3. Saturday walking street at Wua Lai road (night): medium size night market
4. Sunday walking street at Tha Phae (night): large night market with smaller streets branching off. Some of the stalls seems to come from Wua Lai (just roving around the different night markets)
5. Central Festival Chiang Mai: Biggest mall i think, but feels a little similar to SG malls
6. Maya Shopping Center: less shops, but nimman area at night (one nimman, thinkpark) has many stalls to walk
7. Central Chiangmai Airport: a surprise despite old building, the shops suit us better in terms of things to buy

I think staying at Nimman area is good for the night market, unless you going for the weekend night markets then stay at old city.

Grab is good, I travel mainly via Grab.
Grab food is also alright, i ordered mango sticky rice at night when we were hungry.

Reply you in red
Since you staying in Nimman, you have any map for cafe hopping? I staying at soi 2 Liv@Nimman condo.

Easier for those who need it
Jing Jai weekend market - weekend morning market, close around 12pm to 1pm.
Saturday walking street - Night market start from 5pm (think so)
Sunday walking street - Night market start from 5pm (think so)
Maya Mall, One Nimman and Think Park are all nearby
