I found the air tickets on these airlines are really very cheap! I'm planning a trip to the U.S. Savings can be quite significant but what are these airlines like? Got personal TV, safe, service? It's a long haul. I don't want to be stuck in a plane with lousy service and no TV to watch.

Only dare to travel with them to China. Food is absolutely the worst ever. Don't know if their long haul flights are better but i rather pay a bit more.

There's also Air China, China Southern, Hainan Airlines, etc...

All are carriers of China except China Airlines which is a Taiwan carrier.

Hi i am also travelling to US (NYC to be exact for xmas) and have done some research on airline and their IFE (in flight entertainment). It is a long flight from SG to JFK airport so my wife and I would prefer a better airline to tide us over the boredom.

For what is worth, my wife and I chose Emirates as it has the best IFE (in flight entertainment), better than SIA and we get to travel in A380 for our SG - DUBAI and DUBAI-JFK leg. You can do your research using yelp (for airline) and seatguru (for seat review and model of airplane).

Hope you have a nice trip!

Turbulence quite hard to determine whether carrier is good or bad. Even SQ will have turbulence. Especially for short flights, it will not be easy to detour to avoid weather (that usually is the cause of turbulence) without significantly increasing flight time. Airline cannot control weather, but airline do determine where you transit at, which will also determine weather.

Only dare to travel with them to China. Food is absolutely the worst ever. Don't know if their long haul flights are better but i rather pay a bit more.
If one is looking for cheap flight, then food (and IFE) will be least of your concern. Bring your own snacks and cup noodles, tablet / laptop for entertainment.

Air travel is very safe, with accident / incident rates being even lower than road accident / incidents. If you dare to travel on roads, why are you concerned about air travel?

Personal TV does not determine what entertainment you can have. UA used to have personal TV, but only play loops with a handful of different loops to choose from, no on demand. So what if no personal TV or IFE? If you save $500 from air fare, you can use that to buy an iPad plus power bank (both for you to keep). I do not get the issue with service standards either, unless I'm travelling with kids and need all the help / service I can get. Walk to the galley to get your drink / service if needed, anything extra, these are bonuses.

Can't pin the blame for turbulence on the airline... lol
Every airline gets all kinds of delays while overflying Chinese airspace, not just Chinese airlines. This is due to the air traffic control regulations over there. But I have yet to encounter delays all these years.

Is not that bad actually. If you save $500 per ticket. A family of 4 will save you $2k. Use this money to buy yourself a nice food after arrived or upgrade your hotel stay.

I have taken China Eastern, Air China, Spring Airlines (short flight, no food) and the food is ok. I'm generally not picky. I don't care for in-flight entertainment either. I took SQ recently and didn't even use the in-flight system both ways. Generally for long haul travel, I will be bringing my tablet (to use on the trip) so that's my entertainment for the flights (if need to).

Recent experience

1. Took China eastern airline to China in June 2015 for holiday
My flight was delayed 22 hours due to technical faults
The airline arranged hotel stay in Singapore with breakfast and lunch
Also the airline paid SG$150

2. When my SIL came to Singapore in Aug
Her luggage were lost and only found after 18 hours

So, must buy travel insurance when taking china airlines.

took air china US-SG route, no problems at all. had 3 meals the entire way, and all meals had 2 options, both of which are chinese food which tasted fine, but i'm not a fussy eater anyway.

definitely no frills, but it's cheap so can't complain.

You should have travel insurance irregardless of the airline you take.

It's the same concept as life insurance. Cause in the end, **** happens.
