Some time ago, someone who was far more knowledgable technically than myself told me that when we are roaming, the internet traffic is still routed back to our home telco's internet proxy server. This then explained why foreigners using roaming could gain access to sites that are blocked in the PRC.

I accidentally 'tested' this claim one day when roaming using Starhub prepaid in Malaysia on a particularly slow connection. I kept getting a proxy time-out message from Starhub.

:s22: :s13:

You may be right. I was able to access everything I can access in Singapore. I was blocked on those sites that are blocked here in Singapore too.

hi for the starhub card, activation is here in singapore or when reached china?

thanks

For Starhub Prepaid SIM card, it is activated upon purchase and registration.

Please do activate Data Plan for mobile data, else it is very expensive without any data plan.

Refer > Happy Roam with StarHub Mobile Prepaid

Do download the Happy Prepaid App to your phone to manage your account.
Login do require PIN via SMS to the Prepaid SIM phone.
Once you have login, there is no need to logout as to press Back key twice to exit and close the app.
Anytime you need to use Happy Prepaid App can be open with either wifi or mobile data.
For roaming you need to Enable the Roaming service in order to have oversea network signal.

Just to mention that I activated SH DataTravel Asia-Pacific last week for my short trip to China. Facebook and Google worked for me. Since I have not used up my 2Gb, I look forward to roaming in my coming trip to Malaysia.

this is true, this is how telco agreement works for data roaming

data must terminate back in the 'home' country

Hi! Did anyone travelled to xinjiang using starhub happy roam? How is the connection
certain part of china , you will not have your data or even inbound calls/make outbound calls

those sensitive areas like certain Tibetan area (which i called starhub to KPKB and that's their answer, it's the china gov policy).

I suppose they want to close ppl's mouth when there's is riot or something, don't want reporter to get the news out immediately

I have M1 data Passport as I have a postpaid plan with M1. Need to use WhatsApp for work. If I use WhatsApp for calls, will I be charged under roaming charges using 4G?

whatsapp call is over data. it doesn't incur voice roaming fee but it will incur data roaming fee so pls make sure you have a proper plan for data roaming

Using Starhub Happy Roam in Zhuhai, no 3G signal. Kenna cheated meh. Macau only got 3G signal. Will not use it again. Should get China Unicom from HK/Macau should be more reliable.

Sharing my Starhub happy roam experience. Over the past week (Aug 2018) I visited these cities: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Yiwu, Wuxi. I managed to have 4G speeds and access to Instagram, Facebook, Gmail, WhatsApp etc without any issues.

Of cos Big Cities will have full 4G access at most places....

Now i am in Germany, Frankfurt.
Using their local Data Prepaid SIM.

CMI, most places at most H+, but with 1 of 4 Signal bar.
Cos alot of places are "Village" according to their term used.

I think China got no 3G signal, as once I set to preferred 4G, I got 4G signal. Previously setting was preferred 3G.
