"Your son is told the job pays $10/hr, his role, if there is a fire, is to take the fire extinguisher and run towards it and put out the flames as best he can. If your son is not willing to take the risk for $10/hr, then perhaps don't accept the job?".

If your house is on fire, is it ok if the SCDF firefighter says he's not risking his life for $3000/mth by running into your house to save the occupants?

Everyone has a choice.

If the pay does not justify the risk, then the event organisers will be left with zero manpower so either increase the pay or abandon the race.

My guess is lack of training and didn't clearly define roles, establish SOPs.

I've seen a few races where the officials ran towards the fire but fumble around with the fire extinguisher like they don't know how to use it.

Even our Formula one volunteer track officials have to go through a theory and practical fire training, how to use a fire extinguisher, from which direction to approach a vehicle on fire.

I'm not saying the people in China shouldn't be paid. Whether it's voluntary or paid, you should know what you are getting yourself into and you're expected to do your job because everyone's lives are at risk.

You can hire part timers. Our Singapore F1 volunteer track officials all have their day job. They volunteer once a year.

The difference is our F1 volunteers have to undergo training. In theory you can be taught how to use a fire extinguisher but in real life when you feel the radiant heat burning your skin, any normal person will give it a second thought about running towards the fire.

That's why the volunteers have to go through proper fire fighting courses and put out an actual fire so that they know what it is like when facing the actual thing.

I think for events that requires higher expectations on safety, it is best to have them held in more suitable places

but for the racers and other competitive sports, they might not have a choice if that is where major events is held
