Actually now the collection point system distributed across different heartland stores and even household kinda works...
That's not run by Singpost though, but the individual courier services with merchant engagement They definitely do work.
Singpost on the other hand is stuck lagging behind the pack. When people use the (premium) postal service, they demand a certain modicum of point to point delivery assurance. The whole parcel post system needs a revamp. Parcel post in itself is bringing down regular mail services and is a burden on the delivery last mile given our high density high rise residential model.
There needs to be a reasonable, cost effective way to free up the mailman from having to visit every unit.
What I posted above is probably excessive unless it is literally a single facility for an entire estate. It could work though as part of a hybrid model.
1. Revamp existing mailboxes such that they are more like mail lockers - big enough to fit a parcel of a decent size. Our void decks are large enough for this to be feasible. One locker per household. Mass produced, they should not cost too much.
2. If it doesn't fit in the mail locker, it goes to a self-service regional collection center like I described, or gets outsourced to collection point contractors. Perhaps a set of large format mail lockers can be set aside every block for these bulky items, and the pins to these large format lockers left in the recipients mailboxes - with an expiring time allowance after which it is self-collect at post office.
That way in most cases the last mile worker will never need to visit a residential unit to rap on the door.
