chipset or psu degrade?

i am using gigabyte ep35-ds4 mobo and a first gen seasonic m12 600w PSU. Both are about 7 years old and supporting 4 sata hdds.

Recently, i was suffering from stuttering effects with the mouse freezing and was pretty sluggish. So i take out one of the hdds and bamm!!! the performance came back. Swapped it with any of the hdds (making it three operational instead of the previous four), and the performance didnt degrade.

Prompting me to believe it might be the PSU or the chipset degrade. I do know PSU might degrade over time, but can chipset suffers the same degrade issue? I am about to change to a newer system and was hoping to retain the PSU (saving some moola) if it assuming it was the chipset degrade.

Before any of you shouting to change the dinosaur, is there a mean of testing which is giving the problem?

I would say that, you should just change everything.

considering that even your HDD should be on IDE, newer drives are all on sata. PSU will degrade over time so, its also better to change.

IMHO, you should just change all. A failing PSU has a chance of raping some of your components.

to summarise, get a whole new build because either

1) hdd/dvd drives obsolete(speed/connectivity)
2) Too old for reliability(may take down your newer components)

Perhaps you might want to backup some stuff on your old PC via thumbdrive/external HDD

there's a chance that one of your HDD is failing(the one that you took out).

i have already duplicated info for backup. I have no worries on data as i have lots of experiences with data failure.

My main point in changing this system is because it got to upgrade for newer softwares, not because it was lacking in performance. If i can, i would try to retain some older stuffs.

My new rams and ssd are on the way. Now seeing if it is skylake or the older haswell on price and waiting time.

So can anyone confirm on whether chipset can degrade? I had a secondary raid chipset on this board and when it failed, the hdds didnt response. Not sure what other behaviours should i expect from this type of hardware.

I don't understand why you want to keep this motherboard then

Quite obvious is your hdd causing the lagging.
Check your task manager for cpu and ram utilisation, clean up your os and installed programs, maybe do a reinstall of your OS
Might not be hardware problem

Don't sound like PSU issue. HDD uses less than 10W. If this 10W makes a difference, then the PSU would have trip when you play games or run load n your GPU and CPU.

Psu overload most probably will sudden reset or system unstable, especially high load

i am trying to retain the psu but need to check if the issue came from the mobo chipset or psu.

To the rest who responded.

Ok noted. Let me work it out further to check if sata cables/power cables or one of the hdd is failing. The earlier test
of swapping the hdds around didnt show any weakness in any of the hdds.

I do know that bad or faulty PSU will trip, but not sure what are the symptoms of making system unstable. Maybe the same case of mine?

Hopefully i dont have to reinstall the entire system and wait it out till the new intel to determine what to buy. Jin lazy har! :o

Giam sia to all who replied to this thread. Got any more insight/experience, please share! Thank you!
