Hi, I will be travelling from Taichung to Hualien in mid December. So my route is :
11 Dec - Taichung to cingjing
12 Dec - Cingjing to Hualien

But the funby thing is the driver I m gg to engage, strongly recommend me not to go by this route. He said highway #14 & #8 very dangerous & may encounter road closure.

Suggest that I go from Taichung -> Taipei -> Yilan -> Hualien.

Anyone can advise which is a better route? Is it dangerous?

The route was damaged by Dujuan due to falling rocks. Not sure when they will be able to clear it.

wow. thanks for the info. i guess i need to check with my driver too as i am also planning to go from cingjing to hualien around the same period as you.

anyway, about the road closure, it happened to me before in january 2013. I was planning to go from hualien to cingjing but did not manage to make it to cingjing because the road was closed.

This site on real time traffic information of the highways in Taiwan may help in planning your route. Just need to click on disaster to view which roads are closed/blocked. :)

The views through highways 14 and 8 can be breathtaking at some places, it also passes the highest point in Taiwan accessible by road at Hehuanshan. Though there are some trade-offs, being a mountainous area, it's a very windy route and it's prone to landslides and rock falls due to natural disasters. Had a self-drive trip in May 2013 and encountered this road blockage in Taroko Gorge, other than that, it was relatively safe. Am going for another return trip in early Dec.

For your driver's recommendation to travel from Taichung-Taipei-Yilan-Hualien, highway 9 from Suao to Hualien is also considered a dangerous route that is susceptible to closure/blockage in the event of natural disasters (but the views along the way are super worth it).

Guess which route to take will hinge largely on your itinerary. Now that typhoon season is over, hopefully it should be relatively safe on these highways :)

this was the reply from my driver:

這條路我常走.目前交通狀況是正常的.若是旅行當天有狀況.我們在依情況調整安排.

the route i going
清境旅店 > 武嶺合歡山 > 碧綠神木 > 天祥太魯閣 > 花蓮旅店.

anyway, mine is a package as I am asking him to bring us around from taichung to cingjing to hualien to jiufen then back to taipei and it is around 7500 twd. do take note that i am travelling in a group of 8 so not sure if it will be cheaper if less people.
a friend recommend him to me and i keep in contact with him through facebook.
