i'm not sure if any of you had this issue when taking planes?
And is there any help or medications?

so far, i only insist in taking SQ as its more spacious and always go for front seat rows.
More leg room
tried to sedate by taking those traveling pills but it just dont work.

will get nervous and worst, asthmatic..
as such, it had been many years since i last take a plane.
i just dont like the tight space..

I dislike taking planes, the more so as I fly more. I cannot wait to get off the plane, but I do not think it is claustrophobia, nor has it to do with being worried about safety. I love trains and have no problem with long train journeys.

Goodness, I thought I am the weird one out there..

Ya, trains are good.
No problem with cruise or car.

It's just the plane

I love taking planes but hate long haul flights. 2-4 hours flight most shiok

Worst parts of flying are during takeoff and landing, because I dislike the sudden warmth from the air-con being switched off. Also the part after landing when every other passenger heads for the door and there is long time to wait before the door actually opens for disembarking. What is the rush? I cannot wait to get off, but is it so hard to wait those minutes in your seats?

totally agrees with you on this..

turbulences are also bad.. only making the flight more unpleasant

I agree with you. It is just not a comfortable mode of travel. No fresh air and open generally cannot see anything outside the window. I have slight claustrophobic feeling in caves and underwater. Best way for me is to be very tired before boarding so I can sleep off the journey. An eye mask and neck pillow are essential.

For the last point, I was pleasantly surprised that in most of my Scandinavian flights, most people behave better. Even if some stand up early to get their luggage, they let the people in front take their time to retrieve their luggage and for them to alight first.

The fear of flying is very real. I don't like being confined to a small space where your survival depends on the pilot. I fear long flights, and have a great sense of relief when the plane lands safely. It's not just claustrophobia, but the realisation that if the MRT train or bus breaks down, the passengers may alight safely. However, when the plane malfunctions in mid-air, survival is slim.

The answer from chatgpt might allay your fear of flying. The assumption where travelling by bus and train are safer than plane is likely a false sense of security. :)

Q:
May I know what's the fatality rate amongst plane, train, ship and bus?

A:
Sure! Generally, the fatality rates vary depending on the region, the type of transportation, and the time period analyzed. However, I can provide you with some general information based on global data.
According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) from 2018, the global average annual fatality rates per billion passenger-kilometers for the different modes of transportation were:
  • Airplanes: 0.18 fatalities
  • Trains: 0.49 fatalities
  • Buses: 0.76 fatalities
  • Ships: 90 fatalities (Note: this high figure for ships is likely due to the inclusion of cargo ships and fishing vessels which have higher fatality rates compared to passenger ships)
It's important to note that these are just averages, and the actual fatality rates can vary greatly depending on the specific circumstances and location. Additionally, it's worth considering that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the travel industry and the associated fatality rates may have changed since the WHO report was published.

I observe that it is due to herd mentality. If someone stands up to move to the door, there is soon a following. It may help if the crew play their part. I have seen stewardesses succeed.

My wife don't have claustrophobia but she had motion sickness. Many years back, she had problem with ferry, plane and even car with long journey. Now we know what she can take and what cannot.
Back to plane, she cannot take budget air due to the plane very shaky and unstable most of the time. So no choice but to book SQ or similar bigger plane. Turbulences is worst when you are on budget plane.

Before taking off, she need to eat 2 Chinese motion sickness medication, cannot look out of window and must eat some candy. Once take off, the plane will be stable, she is fine. Going to land, same cannot look out of window and must eat some candy. No motion sickness effect.

Going to Chiang Mai, we transit to Thai Smile, 1 hr flight, she done well without any medication.
Return trip from Chiang Mai to SG, take 2 Chinese motion sickness medication. Thai Smile 1 hr flight transit to Thai Airway in BKK. Land SG with no problem.

I think it's good to know your problem, what can and what cannot. Slowly learn to tackle your problem.

I have the same problem too
i will feel it more when flying to the destination
not much anxiety when flying home
i tried night flights
but somehow I will be awake
I tried 2 days without sleep
and attempted night flight
again cannot sleep

I have no issue with taking off or landing
first 60 min is usually good
i can eat, sleep and watch the entertainment system

after the 60 min mark
I will start feeling very constraint
and confined to my seat
no wifi make it worst
i will stop using the entertainment system

my trick to survive the flight
will start playing my music
with my bose noise cancelling headphone
I will start drinking red wines
to make myself drowsy
And “enjoy” the turbulence

Without getting myself drowsy
each time the safely belt light is on
i will somehow start to anticipate the turbulence
and just grab tight my seat arm rest
the maximum flight duration I can fly to
just 6 hours

I would love to fly to Europe and usa
but just can’t
