Hi,

I would like to change my notebook 500GB hdd to 250GB ssd. After changing, I would like to reinstall win7 using the HDD recovery, which is located in the HDD.

I cloned the whole hdd (letting the AOMEI Backupper determine the partition size), but I am not able to invoke the recovery mode. I also tried to clone partition by partition but the system refused to boot up.

Please advise how shall I do the clonning so that I can reinstall win7 with the SSD.

Regards.

if you use MBR, AOMEI might have failed to make the SSD active. at least that's what happened when I tried to clone using AOMEI.

boot from the HDD with the SSD attached, go to Disk Management to check if the cloned system partition on SSD is active.

Can you elaborate more? When you mentioned "System Partition", are you referring to the partition with the windows OS?

I am able to boot up the laptop with the SSD. However, when I try to invoke the system recovery, long pressing of "0" and tab the power supply, I am unable to go into the system recovery mode. Therefore, I am thinking that I may be missing something somewhere during the cloning.

When you first clone your SSD, you must instruct the program to clone also the disk signature.

Recovery partition recognise the disk signatures before it will allow you to go into the recovery mode.

Actually fresh install is way better. I did mine yesterday and it only took 15 mins to reinstall windows and 1 h to get everything installed and up running...

Thanks, I am doing this using my desktop, not the laptop, maybe that's the reason for the disk signature to be different and it refused to go into recovery mode.

I agree. However, the recovery disk is located on the hdd, not CD. Therefore, I will need to clone everything over to the SSD, and then re-install the OS again. Is there anyway of copying the "hdd recovery" onto a DVD and boot up from there?

You can forget about it. The recovery partition needs the motherboard to be the same.

Edit: sorry read wrongly. Thought you wanted to use it for the desktop.
Yes you will need to clone the disk including the disk signature and you should be able to reinstall the os to factory settings.

I finally manage to clone and reinstall win 7 onto my laptop. However, what puzzled me is that I am not invoking the recovery by long pressing the "0" button. I need to make the recovery partition become Active, and then it will automatically boot up from that partition.

Am I missing anything?
