Hello EDMW!!

I have been struggling to get my Pc to read my hdd which holds around 400gb of photos / data

went to a shop for diagnosis and he said my hdd is corrupted . Will need data extraction / recovery as the computer can only see it as a usb , but non readable or writable anymore .

What I’m concerned now is , I still have 1tb of travels photos on my computer which I initially wanted to put into the hdd . But seems like I now have to find alternatives:

1) buy google drive storage and expand my google photo space to 2tb

2) buy another hdd but this time , maybe every 3 years have to buy another hdd in anticipation of failure

Which is the better choice and why ? I’m really so sad now
IMHO.
I believe the hdd in question is a portable HDD using USB.
It is how you use it.
How long it last is one thing, how you use it is another.
If you get one of the same technology, the end result is the same.

He is actually following well established industry best practice modified for a home use environment.
911 taught me a valuable lesson. No one expected both twin towers to fall, and together with the company's data and backups, which are all in a single location.

It took me some time to figure up on site to site vpn and data replication across remote locations. An idea that I got it all to work using SOHO equipment.

Both

Because I used to have online photo album and all the photos gone when the site ceased service
The only photos that survive are those ancient photo albums your parents keep. Digital photos keep getting obsoleted or have their storage media fail.
