Inns You Can Stay Within 10,000 Yen in 365 Days (Pt 1)
This week, we will stay in inns which offer special deals throughout the year. Under these plans, a night’s stay costs less than 10,000 yen (S$159) per night, and includes two meals. These inns also offer various free privileges to guests.
We first go to an inn in Izu, which boasts an excellent ocean view. Start your trip by taking a train to Shimoda Station, the terminal of Izukyu. Shimoda in Shizuoka became an open port over 150 years ago. Have lunch in Nagasato, which serves fresh local fish. Try the speciality – seiromeshi. It features a delicacy of Shimoda, kinmedai, which is seasoned with a special sauce. The dish comes with rice and other colourful ingredients. Next, head to your inn for the night. It costs 7,800 yen (S$124.25) per night to stay at Shimoda Itoen Hotel Hanamisaki. A bath tax of 130 yen (S$2.07) per person is charged separately. The hotel has 97 guest rooms, comprising Western and Japanese-style rooms. Guests are also allowed to use its various facilities, such as a karaoke room, table tennis room and billiard room, for free. They will also be given a map of Shimoda Onsen to help them during sightseeing.
After relaxing in your room, rent a bicycle for 500 yen (S$7.97) and take a tour of the area. Visit the oldest shrine in Izu, the Shirahama Shrine. It was established 2,400 years ago. Many people come here to pray to the deity of marriage in the hope of finding a good life partner. Return to the hotel and try out its refreshing hot spring. After a leisurely bath, enjoy a dinner buffet featuring Japanese, Western and Chinese cuisines. Items include salmon fried with vegetables and seasoned with miso, tempura made of a****aba from Shimoda, and boiled kinmedai. In addition, drinks such as beer, sake and distilled liquor are free too, but only for an hour. The next morning, tuck into a breakfast buffet featuring 30 dishes.
Our next hotel trip is ideal for families and takes us to Hokuriku. First, make your way to Kanazawa in Ishikawa. It used to be a bustling castle town during the Edo period and still has several scenic spots. Before going to your hotel, make a stopover at the famous Omicho Market. Known as the “kitchen of citizens”, the stalls here sell lots of fresh food and seafood from the Sea of Japan. It attracts many locals because of its cheap prices. Have lunch at a restaurant called Hirai. Located within the market, it is known for its delicious seafood don. The dish comes packed with 11 kinds of fresh seafood. If you’re travelling in a big group, order the Kaga Yuzen chirashi-zushi, which is perfect for sharing.
From here, go to Kaga Onsen Station, from where you can take the pick-up bus to the inn located in Katayamazu Onsen. Katayamazu Onsen is situated close to Mt. Haku. It costs 6,700 yen (S$ 106.75) per night to stay at the Nagayama inn, and includes two meals. The hotel boasts 116 guest rooms, including Japanese and Western-style rooms. Families can stay in the Western room which comprises two bedrooms. The rooms come with a gorgeous view of Lake Shibayama and the Sea of Japan. Guests can choose from yukatas of different colours and designs. They come in various sizes, for both adults and children. However do note that only the first piece is free; any additional pieces cost 100 yen (S$1.59) each to rent. The hot spring here is one of the famous spas in Hokuriku. Besides an open-air bath beside Lake Shibayama, the hotel also has other privileges for guests such as table tennis facilities, unlimited Internet access, 15,000 comic books, a kids corner with a games zone, a karaoke room and a billiard room. There is even has a public theatre which stages two plays a day for guests. Guests can make use of all these perks for free! The spa inn also offers fish spa therapy, but guests have to pay 500 yen (S$7.97) to enjoy this popular activity.
For dinner, enjoy a buffet of 60 dishes featuring Japanese, Western and Chinese cuisines. There is sushi, amberjack, tuna, fried chicken, grilled steak, tempura, pickled plum, kimchi and lots of other delicious items. The highlight is the spread of desserts, especially the ever popular chocolate fountain. It is a treat enjoyed by adults and children alike! The next day, for breakfast, 40 different dishes are prepared, comprising mainly healthy Japanese items. Since the check out time is only at 12pm, make use of the hotel’s free ashiyu in its spacious garden.
We next travel to Hakone in Kanagawa, which is a famous hot spring resort with scenic spots. First, board a sightseeing cruiser at Togendai. It takes about 30 minutes to travel to Hakone and along the way, you can enjoy the picturesque view of Lake Ashi. Once you reach Hakone, if you are hungry, drop by the Akakura restaurant for lunch. Its speciality is seiromeshi with Hakone-buta and local vegetables. Next, make your way to your hotel in Kowakidani. At Utayu no Yado Hakone, a night’s stay costs 9,800 yen (S$155.76) – including two meals - throughout the year. A bath tax of 150 yen (S$2.38) is charged separately. Tatami is laid all around the hotel, including the lobby and even the stairs! Its free facilities include karaoke, Internet access, table tennis and two chartered baths. Do note that you have to make a booking first, and the karaoke facility is free till 7pm only. The inn has 50 guest rooms of various styles and sizes. Dinner is a full-course meal, comprising tuna and sea bream sasazuke; cherry blossom with soy sauce; tomato soup; rape blossoms and spring cabbage salad; salmon grilled with seasonal vegetables; roasted beef with red wine sauce; chocolate mouse and vanilla ice cream wrapped in rice cake; and coffee. For breakfast, guests are served healthy cuisine. A special item is the hotel’s homemade bread called Peter-pan. You can put your favourite ingredients on it and create your own sandwich.
