Coding rig reccomendation

Hi can you guys advice me on what build is good to practice/learning coding on. I will be mainly doing R,C and python for now but i might progress to other language if work demand it. My budget is ard 1.2k for all the components including windows if possible. thank you in advance

Will touch apple coding stuff using xcode? If so just get a MacBook. If not, any basic PC will do.

If you are doing python, can actually just do on your phone. Use rptl (online tool) for console and shell interface. No need to specially get a computer for it.

not gonna touch apple codes. i heard sometimes my assignments will involve complex coding stuff thats why i was wondering if its possible to make like workstation type of stuff that is like available in NTU and such

Personally went for MacBook

Personal must for coding:
- High density and good quality screen since I’m gonna stare at it for hours
- Strong cpu and decent amounts of ram for compiling
- No need for dGPU for maximum battery life and reduced heat

Did mainly backend dev / command line and some frontend HTML, android(java), iOS(swift) hence my choice to leave out a dGPU which turned out well for my usage and battery lasted >8hrs doing Xcode/Sublime/Atom although Java based IDEs including Android studio hit my battery hard.

MacOS + docker + VIM, you can code anything for sure

Honestly any mid-range ready made PC will do. Unless you are running virtual machines there's no need for a "special workstation" build.

I'm sure NTU overpaid for their workstations too.

Get a laptop.

For coding, battery life is the most important factor. Trust me, u wouldn't be able to concentrate on programming if u realize that u need to connect to an AC power outlet within 15 mins. And laptops with battery life that can last u thru at least 2 back-to-back lectures without dying would be preferred.

Also, good to find laptops that have a thunderbolt 3 connection. When u need graphics horsepower for computation (e.g. GPGPU), connecting an external graphics dock to your laptop beats a dedicated workstation PC anytime in terms of portability.

If u need more screen estate when coding, connect the laptop to an external monitor of your choice.
