Hey guys, was browsing SGcarmart earlier and came across used COE cars. My question is, what does COE car mean by definition? Does the cost reflect on the site includes the COE amount/year remaining from the registered date? Say if the price reflects $30,000 with 4 years of COE remaining for a used COE car, does it mean that the $30,000 is all we need to pay to legally use the car on the road?

And what are the pros and cons of getting a COE car compared to PARF car and new car apart from the money factor?

Coe cars = cars over 10yrs n there is no parf value.

Pro, can scrap n take back coe balance amt
Con, old cars higher chance of breakdown

For sinkies 10 years means very old, which is a joke when ppl elsewhere easily drive to 4-500k. Yea u replace a few parts here n there but it’s just once awhile.

Coe cars have coe value and a bit more cost upfront. There’s no parf but u can compare to how it depreciates with a parf car and note the difference.

my cousins neighbor in the us owns a 20+ yo toyota avalon with 250k+ miles (~330k km?). i believe the owner took very good care of it since day 1 and surprisingly, both engine and tranny is still running smooth. according to the amdk owner, it hasnt been reconditioned at all.

the problem with a used car (doesnt matter if its 3yo or 8 yo or >10 yo) is that u do not know the history of the car. hence most here will advice u to carefully inspect it, look at servicing records if any, test drive it, look for signs of accident repairs on the front rear and sides...

Pros - supposedly cheaper than buying new car. Less cash upfront.
Cons - potentially higher cost of maintenance due wear and tear (unless many things were already done prior), higher interest rates for COE cars if you take loan, no paper value less COE, road tax will increase 10% for each year cap at 150% of original road tax.

Just make sure you don't pay admin charges or whatever to the shop. There is no such thing as admin charge. Tell them then you do it yourself to transfer as it is so simple. Just read the LTA and one motoring website.

but $30k left 4 years .. you can get cars with similar depreciation which are not past 10 years.

Another thing to take note of COE car is u need to go for inspection every yr instead of once every 2 yrs

coe value left 30k doesnt mean car will sell at 30k

probably be sold at 35k or above

COE cars may be cheaper, but their prices are overly inflated

You also need to consider the higher cost of road tax and vehicle inspection frequency

COE cars their warranty and servicing provided by the dealership correct?

Not that significant for cars below 1600cc for road tax.

example this car. its $24,800 so my bf only need to pay this amount correct?
https://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=802481&DL=1194

or are we getting it wrong? what else we need to pay for?

You are just buying the car. Warranty / servicing provided in sales agreement with dealerships are normally non-existence or not much use. Make sure you test drive it.

By right that us the amount, however she you confirm all miscellaneous charges that the dealership will include. Dealerships can have random charges included. Better to ask upfront during first viewing. The charges for different cars in the same dealerships may be different as well.

Ask dealer make it black and white, state the total amount you will need to pay for the car.

And u need to pay1 year insurance premium, buy yourself or agent.
If the road tax is due, pay road tax to Lta as well.

Lol depre 5k per year for a 10 year old car. Take the money go buy a new attrage better. Depre also about 5k/year with legit warranty and servicing.

If you wanna get Coe renewed cars, aim for direct sellers. Dealers are all selling at a premium. Give you an example.

Parf: $5k for cat a cars + max 1k odd for body
Coe renewal: 5years @ 13k+, 10years @ 26k+
Total cost: 5years @ 19k+, 10years @ 32k+.

Use that amount and deduct from the dealer selling price, that's the profit they are making, you can even factor in they might spend 1k odd for repaint to fix this and that (provided they bother to fix).

Cannot compare coe better car with attrage. Which is much slower despite the better condition

really appreciate all of your input. just wondering. all of you are saying don't buy COE car? but people are still buying them. my colleague husband bought a volkswagen 5 year COE car. she told me no problem at all. and was cheap.

lets look at this car. it's a honda stream 5 year new COE. it says that this dealer has a premium dealer 2019 award. and it will cover 2 years warranty for engine and gearbox. and it has sold 81 cars with 37 cars available. please share your honest opinion so that my fiance and i can make a decision whether to get a COE car or a new car. thanks.
