Hi all, I will be going China for a short 2 week holiday, I have heard that some of the platform was ban in China, I now would like to know what is the work around so I could contact my family in Singapore.

Either you use VPN or roam on your Singapore SIM card, then can access the platforms mentioned.

If you have Singapore SIM card then use it as there should not be any issue.

To avoid unnecessary high charges on your postpaid, go for local S'pore Telco Prepaid SIM, such as Starhub Prepaid SIM.

Most Telco Prepaid SIM offer local data plan for to surf oversea.

For folks staying there long term or regular travelers to China, suggest subscribing to a paid VPN service.

But be weary with selecting the VPN provider as the Chinese have manage to block quite a few (especially the free ones) after a recent purge.

If can afford, get the M1 mySIM 3 50 + China Data Passport. Yes it’s not cheap at $75/mth, but you do get 30GB of data per month for data roaming. Just make sure you've another Chinese line for normal voice calls, roaming voice and text is very expensive.

Going for mySIM unlimited doesn't give you anything more, so it's useless.

WhatsApp doesn't work, even on WiFi so an overseas SIM would help.

I installed WeChat but I seem to remember Skype might have worked as well (yes, still using it). VPN can be tricky, some places allow and some not but I have it set up on the phones and it helps on WiFi provided network speeds supports the drop that comes from being on a VPN.

Anything that is from US companies, you likely can't use it. I know for sure that Google search and map don't work. Facebook I did not try.

VPNs used to be the solution. However, China have banned VPNs. So getting one that works is also tricky. Since you are going for a short while, my recommendation is to try and use their alternatives, i.e. Baidu search.

Yes, this is most users comments and who have already done so.

Basically it may be based on gateway in the APN setting as it also depend on the Telco SIM card.

Or else get a China prepaid card from online Singapore seller which will allow you to those apps that you mentioned.

wechat is an alternative, or you can use local telco roaming. They are able to bypass the firewall in china.

VPNs are also viable, but the chinese gov will block them when there are important events going on, so it's 50-50.

can use singtel auto roaming. it works as i tried during my trip in china.

Auto roaming is an option, but it’s quite costly. Not sure about changi airport MIFI, maybe that will work fine too?
