Not OC no need CPU Cooler

For gaming wise, 8gb ram enough (esp if he wants to channel more money to GPU)

For PSU, get a reliable 550w PSU will do. Like Superflower or Corsair.

For the DVD writer, I have a spare samsung one, used only once to install Windows 7 for my recent rig. I can let it go for $15 if your friend wants. PM if you want this.

What kind of game does he want to play anyway?

CPU + Mobo: Asrock b85killer + 4670 - $419
PSU: Superflower HX 500M Gold - $105
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 (2x4GB) - $109
HDD: WD Black 1TB - $115
Case: Sharkoon T28 - $89
DVD Writer - $15
GPU: MSI GTX 770 - $555

Total: $1407

Or for a better value for money, swap the GPU for MSI R9 R280x @ $479 and use the extra money for a 120gb SSD for boot drive.

CPU + Mobo can also cahnge to MSI B85m-G43 + 4570 @ $382, cutting some cost.

he's not happy with 8GB ram...
he wants 16GB... but he says valueram from kingston also can. which IMHO is kinda getting a supercar with lower capacity turbocharger...
i'll ask him if he would consider 12GB config
basically 2x4GB+2x2GB or 1x8GB+1x4GB...

550w enough for psu...guess maybe i'll consider 620w bundles with casing at pcthemes

he plays FPS games... like dayz cs, etc...

Its time for you to guide him and educate him further. He is probably being mislead somewhere.

The mobo and cpu choice is fine, but no need till a 4670. A regular 4570 is enough. Asrock b85 killer is a great board.

Second is the SSD. Wait till he taste what is SSD, then he will know what is it like, and what is the difference. Please tell him that an SSD performs way faster than a HDD. It is a good investment. It does not only provides super fast boot up and super fast shutting down. It helps improve the overall OS responsiveness. It also helps in reducing loading time for applications. Certain games benefit from SSD loading time, might give you the upperhand to start first some times.

He wont need till a black HDD. A blue is enough with accompany with SSD.

He does not need till a 16gb ram. Nornal gaming rig ram usage may not go till 8gb. I so far open a game and a few tabs of webpages and im still left with 3gb. More than enough.

mobo was my own choice...:D since he left that up to me... ram wise...trying to see if he can agree to 12GB compromise...idk what other stuff he runs in background
probably more than a few tabs of youtube playing songs...

TBH... he was kinda a laptop centric person...
he got inputs from other ppl selling him their old rigs...

reason why i'm stressed abit coz he just decided to drop by sim lim later today and let me choose all the parts minus monitor, kb and mouse.

Zotac 770 amp!
seasonic g650 650w or corsair rm650
Corsair 730t if budget allows, cause this chassis retails at $2xx. Else fractal design r4

What is your friend's monitor resolution? And with such a budget, it will be a great pity that you didn't include a SSD into the build. That component is totally worth paying for rather than spending money on fanciful casing or rams.

With regards to RAM:

1. Outside of synthetic benchmarks, you will not be able to tell the difference b/w 1333 and 1600 in a double blind test.

2. Most most most games right now (I'm assuming that it is not a work machine) have 32 bit executables, which means that the memory usage on a 64 bit OS like Win7 will not exceed 4GB per program instance.

The only reason to get >8GB of RAM is for
a) 64 bit software, mostly professional software as of now
b) RAM disk.
c) VMware - eg. MMO farming

Getting more RAM which is unused will not make the machine run faster. It is just a waste of money.
