I have been facing this problem intermittently - At random times, my PC would freeze up. The immediate sign of this would be that my keyboard and mouse stop functioning and their LEDs would no longer light up. I kept a log of all such occurrences and could not find any common runtime conditions (e.g. programs running in background and foreground, time since boot, last performed action etc). The only way to continue would be to reboot my PC via the reset button or power off and on again.

At first, such freezes occurred approximately every 2 weeks. Recently, it became every 3-4 days. Sometimes, I get a freeze soon after boot up, when I enter the Desktop after keying in my PIN (using Windows 8).

Anyone knows why or how I can further do error logging?

1) Reseat RAMs, download and run Memtest 86+.

2) Download and run CrystalDiskMark to check health of HDD.

3) List down the specs of your rig. If using OEM, state exact model of computer used.

lets say you are playing games/videos... does the sound gets messed up ? like tape recorder getting stuck

from my experience,
HDD failing also can cause that
especially if primary HDD(containing windows and games)

after a while, the degradation from so many cold reboots will damage the essential parts of windows and it will come up with that common error message

my advice is back up primary drive...and replace it with new HDD or go SSD if you can

Thanks for the information. My PC specs are as follows:

Intel i5 750 Quad 2.66ghz processor with Gigabyte P55UD3P
Kingston 2gb ddr3 1333mhz ram x 2
Powercolor 5850 1gb
(Primary) Samsung Evo SSD 256gb
(Secondary) Western Digital 500gb blue hard disk
Samsung sata dvd writer
OCZ modxstream pro 650w psu

I upgraded to SSD approximately 9 months ago. All other parts are from Dec 09.

@dreadknight: Yes, I believe the sound gets messed up. If I remember correctly, it would either keep repeating the last 0.5 to 1 sec or just give a blaring sound.

Take out the motherboard. Check if there is any burn marks underneath.

Also check if any dust collected on the ram slots. Clean it if there is.

if already on SSD...

im guessing sata controller on mobo might be faulty
coz thats what happen on my old mobo...

once i fully occupy the sata ports... it keeps losing track of HDD connected to it.. i got a few HDD damaged by it

but doesnt hurt to check your mobo properly for other sign
even infamous bloated capacitors...
worse case is ESD may be culprit...hard to tell

Something new happened:

The freeze occurred. So I hit the reset button. This time, while booting, just before it hit the Windows loading screen, there was a continuous beep lasting around 2 seconds. My computer then reset itself on its own, loaded windows normally.

Any chance we can further narrow the possible fault down before I open up my PC?
