Confused: NFC for transport

Hi,

Never used NFC for transport before and I dont want to hold up queues at gantries while I figure out, so hope to get some sharings:

1. I'm on android. Which is the most reliable and easiest app to use as default nfc payment? (eg google pay?, netspay?, singtel dash?, etc)

2. Do I need to unlock phone or just wake the phone before tapping?

3. Has it failed for you before either on bus or train?

4. Just need to confirm that the TL SimplyGo app is not required, i.e. no need to register credit card to SimplyGo?

Which Android phone are you using?

If you are using Samsung, Samsung Pay do not need to keep the screen on for transit tapping in and out. You need to keep NFC turned on.

If you are using other phones, you will need to use google pay, screen has to be turned on.

To track your payments and records, do download the simplygo app. For Samsung Pay, you need not register with simplygo as you can do it in the SS phone settings.

I would say, so far it failed to detect exit on 2 occasions. Most of the times it works.

Good to know simplygo is optional.

BTW, when exit failed, what did you do? take out the physical card that was linked to google/samsung pay used for entry? or just leave/seek assistance?

If exit fail... go to the simlygo website to ask for refund balance... (you hv to register the usage card first)

Oh I forgot a question: Do I need to worry about which of these are selected under 'Secure element position'?:
- Embedded secure element
- Use HCE Wallet
- Use SIM Wallet (default choice)

1. I been using google pay on bus and mrt for awhile.

2. Google pay just need to wake up phone and tab.

3. Usually issue on bus, some of the reader just cant read the phone. But once every 2-3 month i encounter this issue.

4. I would suggest u register the app so that u can track and raise claim ticket.

- When i can't tab out the bus i will walk off and claim later.
- Very rarely i do that like 2 times after 1 year usage.

- If you exit fail on bus can try again.
- If you tap in using phone out must be phone. (so don't use card)
- If you have issue tapping in or out of MRT gates > go control station with your phone to ask them for help. Like what u do for physical card.

yes my phone has nfc, that setting choice is under nfc. maybe I'll just leave it at default for now.
UPDATE: googled a bit more and found that for Mi phones better to set to HCE Wallet.

My google pay i deleted the old app and use the new app but cannot use transport suddenly. Is this a known bug?

Check to make sure that it's the default payment app, and that the payment protocols/settings are correct.

Yeah, I realised that. I think it's what pushed me to prefer Samsung pay over Google Pay all those years ago.

Because of the MST sensor, there is a hardware component for Samsung pay.

MST useful for countries or shops where their machines only support magnetic stripe cards.
Samsung has already started to phase it out with their current flagships.
Less of a necessity in SG now that NFC and QR codes are very common .

MST also gets around the upper limits for transactions. I think it's like $1k or lower, since it's a swipe card transaction.

But yes, moot since it's gone with the S21 series onwards. Samsung seems to be killing off useful features like the SpO2/HR sensor, the notification LED, expandable storage support, and others

That's incorrect. I have mine set to Sim mode. Works nicely on my poco x3 nfc

I used to use the SIM NFC for transport. Am guessing that without the hardware component present, the phone will automatically switch to one of the other modes.

NFC on buses are prone to "missing exit" errors. Need to check your fares always.
