Conncecting DSLR to Laptop

Hi Guys! I'm really not quite sure if this query I have goes under computer or camera so please do not flame me

What I have:

Canon 700D/ Rebel T5i (With HDMI output/ AV output)
13 inch Mac.
HDMI cable


Situation:

I'm trying to connect my DSLR to the laptop to do live view while filming a video so that I have a clearer and bigger screen to look at. I'm trying to do it WIRELESSLY so that mobility is not affected in any way.

Been looking around, and have been given different opinions. The best solution I had so far is connecting AV out to my laptop via usb but that's with a 2m wire and i'm afraid it will affect mobility of the camera person while filming.

I know for the Canon 7D, it has a wifi built in to be able to do live view via the EOS utility software that was given with the camera.

The main reason for not getting a HD monitor to solve the problem is that due to budget constraint, i'm not willing to spend that expensive amount of money, hence, trying to find a cheaper solution to it.

Pardon if i sound like a newbie but i'm really new to this and any solutions will be greatly appreciated.

I should also mention that I bought the HDMI cable so that i could connect the HDMI OUT (700D) to the HDMI IN (Macbook) with this software "DSLR remote Pro" but it doesn't seem to be working.

Video out only works with tv or monitors

If you want to connect to a laptop, use a USB cable and then use EOS Utility

The EOS utility connected to the notebook via a loooooong wire is a cheap option
You can also use USB over RJ45 extenders to give a longer reach

The Aputure 7" Screens are the next cheapest option

Or if you die die want a connection to notebook
Its wireless HDMI + HDMI capture peripheral

The wireless HDMI is expensive.
The miracast thingies dun work. It is a waste of money.
The dongles are about $300+ cheapest to $XXXX for the teradek ones.
Then the HDMI in is about $300 for the blackmagic ones..

Hmm I might consider Getting a HDMI screen in the long run but seems like the usb is the option to go for now! Thank you guys!

just buy an Aputure or Lilliput monitor, they are the cheapest available. not sure abt the quality though coz i've never used one before.

a proper monitor will make you look a little bit more professional also, rather than fumbling around with a laptop. lesser stress, better shots

The Aputure / Lilluput monitors only have a resolution of 800x480. They are usually acceptable unless one is into pixel peeping

If you need a small monitor with good quality, get the SmallHD ones. They are awesome, in quality, as well as in price.

As to whether it makes one look professional, it really depends on what is the nature of the job


if its just shooting personally, one man show, the in built screen is more than sufficient. Most of us using video cameras also live with a small screen. If screen is an issue, either get a cam with a flexible screen or a dedicated video camera. If the screen is too small, get a bigger 7" screen to be mounted on top of the cam. This scenario suits static shots more than run & gun type of shots

The wireless screen connection is usually used when a director/producer/editor/client is involved, and they want to direct the composition of the shots. The screen from a distance helps in this aspect, whereas a smaller screen attached to the camera does not. So yes, this is definitely not fumbling with a notebook!

I do live streaming and we usually preview the camera angles in the production area and prompt the cameraman to "hold shots" before we switch to his cam. Imagine the horror, if the camera man were to be distracted when his camera is live!

I can be quite a pixel peeper, that's why I bought SmallHD.
but they are indeed pricey. my set cost about 1000SGD excluding shipping. but you can get them from Cathay now though I wonder how much the difference really is.
