I am a newbie. Some advices from bros will be appreciated.
I have a HP Z400 workstation that I used for the last 5 years. Been serving me very well. General uses but more into photo editing using Photoshop, On1 etc.

The workstation sort of died a couple of weeks ago- it gave 4 beeps (p.196 of http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c02589908-1.pdf)
Went through the diagnosis and it seems either power supply or motherboard is the problem. I managed to get a refurbished psu and changed it but still having the same problem. So may have to replace the motherboard but getting a replacement will be a challenge since the model is discontinued. Even if I could get one, it will likely to cost in excess of $400. So I am considering the following:
1) replace the motherboard or look for a generic one that can be used with the various hardware components. Advice needed: a generic motherboard for the components- is this possible?
2) ditch the system but use the components for a new system. Ideally I can still use the cpu (which is a pretty good one) and the chasis. If not, what would be a good starting point for cpu, motherboard & graphics card for a budget photo editing system.
