SINGAPORE – Even though the traffic lights at a T-junction in Upper Bukit Timah Road had already turned red for five seconds, a man cycled through the junction and rammed into a 70-year-old pedestrian crossing the road.

The pedestrian, who had the green man in his favour, was flung onto the road and died in hospital on the same day.

The cyclist, Lester Lu Su Min, 49, was sentenced to two months’ jail on Oct 31 after pleading guilty to causing death by performing a rash act not amounting to culpable homicide.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Ng Jun Kai said that at around 5.30am on March 6, 2024, Lu left his home to meet his friend at Upper Thomson Road to go cycling.

From the meeting point, Lu and his friend cycled along Upper Thomson Road, Mandai Road, and Upper Bukit Timah Road.

As Lu was approaching a T-junction along Upper Bukit Timah Road towards Jalan Anak Bukit, the traffic lights turned red, but Lu did not stop his bicycle.

“Instead, after the traffic lights at the T-junction had turned red for approximately five seconds, the accused cycled across the T-junction at a considerable speed and collided directly into the deceased, who was crossing the T-junction which was showing the green man for pedestrians,” said DPP Ng.

The speed at which Lu was cycling at was not mentioned in court.

The force of the collision propelled the elderly pedestrian onto the road where he landed on his back.

The victim was taken to National University Hospital, where he died.

Seeking a jail term of 2½ to 3½ months’ jail, DPP Ng highlighted how Lu had deliberately beat the red light before colliding with the victim, who was crossing on the green man.

In sentencing, District Judge John Ng told Lu: “It is an unfortunate situation you have for yourself. It is also very sad for the family of the deceased. Nobody intends to be in such situations.”

According to the mid-year traffic figures released in August, more people were killed or injured in road traffic accidents in the first half of 2025, compared with the same period a year ago.

There were 78 fatal accidents from January to June, up from 70 in the first half of 2024, with the number of deaths rising from 72 to 79.

In 2024, the number of people killed and injured in traffic accidents hit a five-year high.

really got off too lightly. I hoped the elder men family appeal for harsher sentence to send a statement to the cycling community that traffic laws must be observed.
