Give the appropriate punishment by taking their freedom away. Put them under harsh probation and ankle monitor to tag them. Sure will learn to behave.

SINGAPORE – Six youngsters aged between 17 and 20 are expected to be charged on Oct 9 with cycling-related offences, including riding without wearing a helmet, riding a bike without brakes, and using a mobile device while riding.

On May 10, they cycled along Scotts Road and Orchard Road allegedly in a manner that endangered both their own safety and that of other road users, said the police on Oct 8.

Not only did they allegedly fail to keep to the far left edge of the road, they were also observed riding in between lanes and performing stunts.

All of them will be charged with not riding close to the left-hand edge of the road.

First-time offenders can be fined up to $1,000, jailed up to three months, or both.

Five of them will also be charged with failing to ride in an orderly manner.

In addition, two of the cyclists will be charged with riding a bicycle on the road without wearing a suitable protective bicycle helmet; one of them with using a bicycle not equipped with working handbrakes; and one of them with using a mobile communication device while riding.

In their statement, the police reminded cyclists to abide by the rules and guidelines for the safety of all road users. Cyclists must:

• Obey all traffic signals and travel in the same direction as the flow of traffic.
• Wear a helmet when cycling on roads.
• Always ride as close as practicable to the left-hand edge of roads, and allow traffic to overtake them safely.
• Cycle in a single file on single-lane roads, and during bus lane operational hours.
• Switch on front white and rear red lights in the dark.
• Always use bicycle lanes when available, and do not use any other part of the roadway.
• Keep to a maximum length of five bicycles when riding in groups, which means a maximum of five cyclists if riding in single file, or 10 cyclists if riding two abreast (allowed only on roads with more than one lane).
• Not use mobile communication devices while riding.
• Not cycle on expressways, road tunnels and selected viaducts.

SINGAPORE: Six cyclists will be charged in court on Wednesday (Oct 9) for flouting multiple road cycling rules, the police said on Tuesday.

The six cyclists – aged between 17 and 20 – were riding along Scotts Road and Orchard Road on May 10 “allegedly in a manner that endangered both their own safety and that of other road users”.

They failed to ride along the far left-hand edge of the road and were observed to be riding in between lanes and performing stunts, read the news release.

According to the police, two cyclists rode their bicycles without wearing suitable protective bicycle helmets. One cyclist also rode a bicycle which did not have a brake while another was using his mobile phone while riding.

In a video posted on the Facebook page ROADS.sg, the group of cyclists are seen weaving in between lanes and cars and performing wheelie stunts.

All six cyclists will be charged under the Road Traffic Rules for not riding close to the left-hand edge of the road, police said.

Five of them will also be charged for failing to ride in an orderly manner, and two will be charged for riding a bicycle on the road without wearing a suitable protective bicycle helmet.

Additionally, one will be charged for using a bicycle not equipped with a working handbrake, and another will be charged for using a handphone while riding.

If convicted, each offence carries a fine of up to S$1,000 (US$770) or a jail term of up to three months, or both.

For subsequent convictions, each offence carries a fine of up to S$2,000 or a jail term of up to six months, or both.

Should have done this much much earlier. Many issues in Singapore is due to inefficient or non existent enforcement. Instead of doing the work properly, now they called themselves authorities and do things the way they want.
