1. What is the East Coast Plan?

During the 2020 General Elections, the PAP introduced the East Coast Plan as part of their campaign for East Coast GRC. The plan was supposed to be a comprehensive blueprint for the area, covering things like housing, transport, and jobs. But hor, when people asked for details, the PAP team (led by then-DPM Heng Swee Keat) couldn’t provide much specifics.

This led to netizens anyhow suan and say:

  • “East Coast Plan is like invisible chicken in cai png – you know it’s there, but you cannot see it.”
  • “East Coast Plan is like cloud storage – you know it exists, but you don’t know where it is.”
Basically, the plan became a joke because it was sibeh vague and lacked concrete details.

2. Why PAP Sent Heng Swee Keat to East Coast GRC Last Minute

Wah, this one ah, like cai png auntie suddenly change the price – sibeh last-minute and got people kancheong spider.

  • Original Plan: Heng Swee Keat was supposed to contest in Tampines GRC, where he had been an MP since 2011. But just before Nomination Day, PAP announced that he would move to East Coast GRCinstead.
  • Reason: The PAP was sibeh worried about losing East Coast GRC to the Workers’ Party (WP). In the 2015 GE, PAP won East Coast GRC with only 60.7% of the vote, and WP was gaining ground. So, they decided to send their heavyweight (Heng Swee Keat) to steady the ship.
  • Outcome: PAP managed to win East Coast GRC in 2020, but their vote share dropped to 53.4%, which was sibeh close. Heng Swee Keat’s last-minute move was seen as a desperate attempt to save the GRC, and it became a talking point for netizens.

3. Why the Joke Became So Popular

The East Coast Plan joke kena viral because:

  • Relatability: Everyone has experienced something vague or last-minute, like cai png auntie saying “no more fish” but then suddenly find one more piece.
  • Political Satire: Netizens love to suan politicians, especially when they chut pattern like this. The joke became a way to poke fun at the PAP’s wayang.
  • Memes and Creativity: Singaporeans are sibeh creativewhen it comes to memes. The East Coast Plan became a blank canvas for all kinds of jokes, from fake brochures to parody videos.

4. Impact on PAP and Heng Swee Keat

  • Heng Swee Keat’s Image: The last-minute move and the East Coast Plan joke slightly tarnished his image as a steady and reliable leader. Some people saw it as a sign that PAP was panicking.
  • PAP’s Strategy: The move showed that PAP was willing to take big risks to protect their stronghold. But it also highlighted their vulnerability in certain GRCs.
  • Opposition Momentum: The joke gave the opposition (especially WP) more ammunition to suan the PAP and rally support.

5. Conclusion

So ah, the East Coast Plan joke is a classic example of how Singaporeans use humor to comment on politics. It started because the plan was sibeh vague, and the last-minute move of Heng Swee Keat to East Coast GRC added fuel to the fire.

But hor, jokes aside, the episode also showed that even the PAP can feel the heat from the opposition. Whether the East Coast Plan will ever become a real thing or remain a memeis up to the PAP to prove. For now, it’s just another chapter in the wayang of Singapore politics.

Remember ah, in politics, no matter how steady you think you are, always expect the unexpected – and maybe prepare a real plan next time! 😂🇸🇬

SINGAPORE – Red Dot United (RDU) on March 23 introduced a possible opposition candidate for the new Jurong Central SMC.

Piano teacher Emily Woo, 59, introduced herself to residents during a walkabout at Yuhua Market and Hawker Centre as RDU’s team lead for the area.

Madam Woo will front the groundwork in the Jurong Central single seat, said RDU secretary-general Ravi Philemon. But he added that it is too early to confirm any candidates for the upcoming general election.

“A lot of things can change from now till Nomination Day,” he told reporters during the walkabout.

Madam Woo, who joined RDU in 2020, said she is a resident in the new SMC.

A former teacher with the Ministry of Education, Madam Woo has been an independent piano teacher since 2000. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music from the Catholic Institute University in Paris.

Former National Solidarity Party member Mohamed Fazli Talip, who joined RDU in 2020, was also seen speaking to residents.

Madam Woo said she has been volunteering in the community, and said residents are concerned about issues like the cost of living.

“We will listen to them and do our best to speak on their behalf. RDU’s policies will be in that direction,” she added.

No other opposition party has laid claim to Jurong Central SMC so far, and Mr Philemon believes a three-cornered fight is unlikely.

Opposition parties are very mindful that multi-cornered fights will give the incumbents an advantage and will do their best to avoid them, he said.

Mr Philemon said RDU had hoped Jurong GRC would remain intact for the general election, but took some consolation that it has worked the ground in Jurong Central as well.

“We’ll send our best candidate to contest in this constituency,” he added.

RDU obtained 25.39 per cent of the vote in Jurong GRC in the 2020 General Election.
