Hi all

I have a laptop about 5-6 years old that still works but after a while it switches off automatically. It makes the make kind of sounds as you long press the power button. So I think it's because of overheating

I have changed the thermal paste but the problem still persist.

Any suggestions? Or should I retire the laptop?
Thanks

Use some software like HWMonitor to check what is the temp. Also, you may want to check if the fan is spinning properly.

To be honest, given the fact that your laptop is already at least 5 years old, it may not make sense to try to salvage it if any part is faulty. Firstly, any faulty part is not that easy to replace in a laptop. And secondly, the cost of replacing things in a laptop is not cheap. You may be better off getting a new laptop.

I have been monitoring the temperature

Before and after changing thermal paste it's still hovering around 80 plus Degrees

How effective is the small laptop cooler in the link above? I thought of getting it but I heard some negative reviews

Just asking to see if there's any options.
If the laptop breaks down, I think I'll just try to sell the parts

Do you mean 80 degs at idle or under load? 80 degs under load is actually acceptable for a laptop. But if its at idle, I think you need to check if the fan is even moving at all, or if you have secured the heatsink properly to the processor/ graphic card.
