Cores vs Speed for Virtualization ??

Shld I get a server with intel xeon cpu that has 4 cores 8 threads 3.5ghz or a cpu with 8 cores 16 threads 2.1ghz for virtualization usage ??

Main question is how many VMs you intend to run.

4 core 8 thread = 8 vCPUs. Assuming 1 vCPU for 1 VM, having more than 8 VMs mean that the vCPU resources will be stolen by other VMs if they require it.

Might use the free VMware ESXi or Promox VE, not decided yet...

Then 4 core 8 thread should suffice. If 4 VMs only can even allocate 2 vCPUs per VM to fully utilize the processor.

Never used Promox before, but ESXI 6 has a webUI for managing the host. Very useful if you are trying to manage ESXI with a non-Windows client.

This dude pick a Xeon-d setup. 8 core 16 thread but only 45w (cos run at 2ghz).
