Corrupted Directories

Hi there,

My external Raid harddisk suffered from corrupted directories and cannot be repaired by Disk Utility.

And if I need to copy the whole lot of them (about 7TB), then reformat the old harddisk and copy back, I need to find another 9TB harddisk ... this is costly right for a temporary storage ?

Any shop offers this service ? To copy, reformat and then copy back ?

if i'm you, I will buy 3 x 3TB or 2 x 4TB HDD and use that for the new raid system

then I'll format the old hdd cleanly and sell them off.

I find it weird you would want to consider using back the old HDD which went corrupted

The problem is I do not know how to setup a Raid 5 system. Previously, the shop did for me.

How to sell the old HDD ?

Also, my old HDD was okay, the files are intact. I cannot copy files from the external HDD to the same external HDD. But I can copy it to my Macintosh HD drive and it can be read, write over or amend in Macintosh HD once written over.

But the files while in the external HDD, it can only be read. Cannot copy or delete.

Btw, is it cheaper to buy a 3 x 3TB or 2 x 4TB ?

set up a new admin user and see if this problem still exist. It could also indicate your machine going to spoil.

anyways, 3TB is best bang for buck at the moment.

You meant the harddisk, the iMac or the stardom enclosure ?

I have no idea. It was setup by the shop. I only used it as "plug and play" ...

But I know it is a RAID 5 system ...

it juz fixed corrupted directories and repair file permissions.

juz don't interrupt the process when diskwarrior is running. can take a very long time especially on disk capacity or size.

if it's a hardware failure, there's nothing dw or any disk utility can do.

wat u describe earlier is probably both software and hardware issues. if can't write into disk but can read, juz unmount the disk. mount it again and run dw.

I wanted to give some more input to you.

But after I read your recent responses, I realise you have completely no knowledge of this. No offence please.

Therefore, I strongly encourage you to seek professional help as you risk losing all your data if you do not do it properly

If you still insist to DIY, I would suggest you buy a new system and copy the data over. Then format the old system, if working fine, sell it off. This is the cleanest and safest approach for you without having to find out what exactly happened. And the subsequent difference in cost will probably be much lower then paying someone to diagnose what exactly happened.

professional help sounds like getting a shrink. me don't know any tech specialist on disk storage. sorrie.

honestly, his descriptions not very clear. read until

but they sounded like wat me experienced recently on two hdds. except my case is not a raid setup.

dat's y one backup is never enuff.

A call to the so called professional help say they wanna charge $800 just to recover my data ...

I have bought a new system, copy it over and then reformat the old one and copy back ... so now I have 2 identical data as added backup ...

All work fine now ... lucky I do it myself ...

ryan, format the old set cleanly and sell it off, Since you run Raid 5, it is protected enough. Just remember, raid 5 can only accept 1 HDD failure, so if your system prompt you, must faster buy another HDD to replace.
