CPU auto shutdown/restart

hi guys,

Not sure if appropriate to post here. I have a problem with my desktop. It auto shutsdown/restart when on idle sometimes. Sometimes, after it shuts down, it cannot be turned on again. Unless i turn off all power and wait for quite some time then I can power on. Or else the light at the power button would flicker for 2 secs then whole pc is off again. I checked that GPU and CPU not overheated. So can someone please advise what is the problem?

CPU - I7 950
GPU - ATI 6870
RAM - 3 X 2GB
HDD - 2 X 1TB
MOTHERBOARD - X58AUD3R
POWER SOURCE - 650W CM

about one year old only.. Just changed. Similar problem caused PSU to spoil previously

Is your power supply CM 650w Extreme? If so, likely to be the cuplrit.

I do not think its the PSU problem. I'm not a geek so i do not know where went wrong, but 650W is more more more than enough to powerup your rig. It could be your configurations, overclocking, mobo. But i'm very sure it's not PSU.

PSU is very simple spare part. Just power up the system, if not enough power/voltage/current, cannot power up that's all. So if you think PSU is having a problem, if you do have necessary tool, measure how much power it is outputting. If not, go to someone to help you check. Better to let a expert take a look if no one is able to help you with it. And remember to tell him all the information that you have, and i mean ALL. I really hate those who gave information halfway/useless and expect us to troublesome from scratch.

There are few reasons why your cpu auto shutdown.

1. Motherboard
2. PSU
3. HDD run halfway, the PSU just cut power to the HDD
4. CPU too hot due to Fan stall or unable to dissipate heat

I think the best way is to isolate it one by one. Try removing your gfx and dvd drive and monitor, is it persist? If it doesn't shutdown or restart it cold be you are lacking of power from the PSU unit itself.

Next check for dust level in the chassis. If possible try to remove as much dust as possible as this could cause the fan to stall or also not enough heat dissipation.

If all fails means it could be the mobo itself. I have 2 cpu of the same situation. Both so swuay mobo faulty.

Problem still persists after cleaning up. Have not tried anything else yet.. Anyone has any similar experience?
