tompang to ask....

my nephew's computer start to haywire for a few times already. the symptom is nothing on display. Specs as follow
- Asus 785M (cant exactly remember which model) with AMD x4-640 (stock clock)
- 2x2GB 1333 total 4 GB
- ATI 6850 1GB
- 500 GB WD Blue
- Cooler master 460W real power psu

Steps i tried:
- unplug everything, plug in one stick ram and try to use onboard graphic card. no display. with cpu and gpu fan running.
- clear cmos by jumper, also by unplug battery, no use.
- test the ram and graphic card on another pc no issue. so i suspect either motherboard and processor.
- when im about to give up and put everything together, it miraculously can boot up :s22: but this happen a few times already, when it cannot boot, i need to try this and that to make it work.

so im thinking to replace it with either one of these options. budget and stability is the most important, as i cannot go and troubleshoot for my nephew everytime :o

A. GIGABYTE GA-B85M-D3H + i5 4460 $348
B. ASROCK B85 KILLER + i5 4460 $329
C. ASROCK H81M-DGS + i5 4460 $292
D. GIGABYTE GA-B85M-D3H + i3 4130 $257
E. ASROCK B85 KILLER + i3 4130 $253
F. ASROCK H81M-DGS + i3 4130 $201

reason B85 is so that can reuse existing ram and add additional 2x4GB or 1x8GB.

my questions are:
1. Is it really necessary for i5 4460 compared to i3 4130? usage is purely gaming those first person shooter.
2. will the 6850 bottle neck with i3?
3. personally i prefer Gigabyte due to good experience with it. i know its heng suay things. but is Asrock low end ok to begin with? or i should get Gigabyte since price difference is around $50?

1. I3 4130 is quite powerful for ur game already, but overall if budget enough of cus I5 would be better.
2 . 6850 wouldn't bottleneck ur I3 , infact I tried 7970 ghz with I3 runs perfect
3 . For low end mobo I find Asus most stable ( in my opinion)

Once DX 12 games start coming in... The situation maybe difference...

You may need a very good CPU to generate good FPS.

But that might be another 1 or 2 years later with window 10.

1. im on budget so i think i would go for i3 ba.... i maybe wrong since i dont play game (fps or such), but i think if got extra $, i guess better to get higher end gfx.

2. thats great.

3. another reason why i prefer gigabyte is that rma place is at commonwealth, nearer to my place as i stay west.

but i still think B85 Killer is a good buy ... what you guys think?

That is if you can find a B85 board.

FYI, most B85 boards are already taken off shelfs. Some shop still may have.

Popular models such as B85 Killer all those wont have.

H81 still have some models left.

B85 most of it taken off. Ever since H97 Z97 came into the scene, the H87 and B85 all start to take off.

Cause B85 pricing so close to H97.
