Hi bros, have a budget of $1500-$1700+. Looking for slightly above average gaming complete CPU. Only use for data analysis (spss, stata, mplus) and casual gaming.

Got this quote from multisys.

23inch acer monitor
Coolermaster chassis
650watt true power PSU
i5 cpu
1tb hdd
8gb ram
Dvd writer
Geforce 650 graphics
Windows 8
Basic key board + mouse
$1519

Good? Didn't get more details. Appreciate the help and advice! Thank you!

What true power PSU is that? Antec True Power? Or some no name PSU?

That kind of statistical analysis (on the basis of the software listed) do not really require that much of CPU power. Doing data anlysis using PCA? PLS? Regression? If you are using the 64 bit version and need that much ram for huge datasets, then 16GB may be a consideration.

The 650 is kind of weak for modern gaming. What games you play matter.

$1519 is kind of steep for that kind of a system anyway, but you pay for convenience...

Consider:
-Change to DELL monitor, generally better built and warranty.
-Seasonic PSU.
-Geforce 650Ti Boost or 750Ti at least

Like some of the bros here have said, you can get a much better system for $1500 from elsewhere. In fact I think you can get a much better system from tradepac for that budget without negotiations. $1500 is actually the budget that I had to get a decent gaming rig (meaning can play games at the highest settings, but no overclocking at all). Plus looking at what you've provided us, there are alot of crucial details missing (and no motherboard?)

Monitor: Try to aim for IPS. I recently switched from a Viewsonic IPS monitor to a PLS monitor and I can immediately tell the difference between the quality especially the whites. If not, LED 1080p monitor is good enough.

CPU: Someone has posted a list of i5 CPU for you to choose and his choices are good. Since you're building from scratch, you should probably aim for the Haswell series for cheaper cost and better power efficiency.

Motherboard: Will depend on what CPU you get but what I look for is durability, number of usb ports and SATA ports. Many people upgrade various components of their PC but only upgrade their motherboard once in a while so durability is important.

RAM: 8gb is typically enough but RAM is also cheap so you can go to 16gb if you want. Just make sure it's DDR3.

PSU: 650W seems to be an overkill to me, you can probably make do with 500W but I'm not an expert on this.

Storage: I really recommend getting a SSD for your OS and a HDD for your storage. It's really night and day when I switched from a HDD to a SSD. A 128gb SSD and a 1TB HDD should be good enough.

Graphics: GeForce 650 is a bad choice if you want to use your PC for gaming and you have a $1500 budget. I'll go for a GTX 760 or a 270X.

OS: I prefer Windows 7 but YMMV.

Chassis: Personally, I feel that if you're not doing anything extreme like overclocking or SLI graphics, you don't need a brand name chassis. I rather put the money towards a better keyboard or mouse. I just make sure that it has a minimum of 4 fans and enough front USB ports. A SD card reader will be a nice extra.

Do you know what IPS, LED and PLS is?
Also, many people have stated that PLS is a better iteration if IPS.

free bump.

anyone can comment on their experience with the setup recommended in the sticky thread? this setup looks suitable for bro Xikhque.

Intel Core i5 3570 & Asrock B75 PRO3 M ~ $364
or AMD FX-8350 & ASUS M5A78L-M LX3 ~ $399
G.Skill DDR3-1600MHz 8GB (2X4GB) ~ $77
Gigabyte R9 270X~ $309 or Gigabyte GTX 660 Ti ~ $
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB or Crucial M500 120GB or Intel SSD 530 120GB
HDD 1TB for Storage ~ $82
Samsung SATA 24X DVD Rewriter ~ $24
Superflower HX 500 ~ $90
Ikonik EN2 ~ $55
Total ~ $14XX

also, remember few years back when I did my research tradepac generally had bad reviews (bad service, faulty parts etc). still true or they improved? seeing as most knowledgeable bros here recommend tradepac. I know they have the best prices but for those less informed about parts is there any risk going there.

Yes, I do know the differences among the 3.

As for PLS vs IPS, I'm speaking from personal experience comparing my new PLS screen to the IPS screen that it replaces. YMMV.

How are you gonna find an EOL case for him? Your pricelist from 2011?

Thanks bros.. Super helpful. Will go to tradepac and ask for bro Royfrosty's set up. Also, heard that windows 7 is much better than windows 8. True? I only tried windows 8 a little. Not used to it. Just thinking in terms of updates and compatibility with programs.
