ME! I connect it to my Sony TV using optical input. If I set PS4 slim to output bitstream I get random popping sound. Initially I thought it could be the tv audio pass through problem. So I connect the optical input directly to Xbox one X. Same problem! So that rule out the problem with the tv. No problem if I set PS4 & Xbox one to stereo or 5.1 surrounds. But 5.1 surrounds sound like normal stereo only and it sound so much different to Dolby digital.

The thing with bitstream is you need to know what the source is bitstreaming, and the speaker needs to be able to handle that format. Chances are the bitstream data is 6.1 channel[1], or it may be DTS. (Katana supports up to 5.1 and Dolby)

Source [1]: https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/3k0jbi/can_the_ps4_output_71_audio_through_the_optical/

And then the 5.1 sounding like stereo part, well thanks to techidiot's extensive testing, when I read between the lines one of my guesses is that the Katana only processes the stereo data and then throw the rest of the channels away, and then do magic on the stereo data to make it feel as if it is surround, but it's still stereo nonetheless.

Well the above is just untested hypothesis. But strangely nobody has seemed to test or notice that fact. Could you be the one? Just play some sound that only exists in the rear channel.

PCM audio stream as for Dolby part.
I still remain skeptical about the Dolby decoding.

Take note Katana is using PC Dolby Audio, just flip to the rear you can see it. Some Sound bar uses Dolby Digital surround which means which means support for Dolby D.

As for Katana is really hard to tell whether it support Dolby D or not.
One thing for sure, when I test katana VS my own soundbar.

Actual soundbar you can hear the surround environment clearly especially rear channels like what Wwenze have mentioned.

In the sense like Batman Arkham games.
Just turn the characters around, on actual soundbar you can hear rear and distance firing/talking.

On katana, it is different can only hear what is around the character or front channel only.

I have been honest with the Katana but my finding were ask to be taken down.
Word of advice, if you feel katana either disappointing or having issues.

Remember Lemon Law is within 6 months, you can ask for refund or exchange depending on the retailer you brought.

However Katana is still a decent UMS speaker for PC, if you want to use it with TV/console best get a actual soundbar.

Saw this during the bookfest and am quite amazed by it, based on cost.

Read thru the thread and realised that it may not be that suitable for TV usage, which was my main intention.

40 inch TV, living room, streaming videos mostly (HD).

Would Katana still be suitable or to move onto other HTS instead? Thanks alot.

Get a Soundbar like Sony CT-290/CT-390 instead.

Thanks wwenze & techidiot for the explanations. With the katana, I never hear or feel the sound is coming from behind me during gaming. The katana sound great on PC but on console is very different. If the sound bar show Dolby D, the sound and bass is loud and punchy. If it show optical, it is a lot softer. Even turn the volume up to 15,16 it’s still no where near the sound with Dolby D at vol level 8,9.

I’m not trying to expect too much from katana. But the popping sound is really irritating and sometimes give a loud pop that shock me. Sound like something explored in the speaker.

I checked creative website and it state katana can support USB input from PS4. Going to try it out later.

Wait lets go back a bit...

Do you mean you can hear continuous sound/music from it and suddenly it will pop while in the middle of it?

Yah, that what I mean. During gaming/movie/YouTube the katana will randomly popping or make those static sound. Sometimes it does not happen at all. This only happen if I choose bitstream on PS4 & Xbox one and katana recognize the input as Dolby D. If choose 5.1 or stereo it does not happen. I connect it to PC using USB input. I did not try optical connection to pc so not sure will this happen on PC.

BTW, I tested connection using USB to PS4. It is recognized as USB headset on the PS4. Volume control on the speaker become useless. Turn volume down to 0 will mute the speaker. Can only adjust the volume with the PS4 setting.....

Hmm...

Depending on how long the pops and static last. If it's for 1 second or less per pop/static, could be bad optical cable.

There is a firmware released on 28 December 2017.

On Creative's support website it states:

"Notes:

Use the shorter USB cable supplied.
Remove all USB flash drives from your device before firmware update.

Do not unplug your device or restart your PC until full installation is completed.
To install the firmware, do the following:
Download the file onto your local hard disk.
Ensure that your device is connected to your computer.
Double-click the downloaded file.
Follow the instructions on the screen."

I have updated the firmware on my Sound BlasterX Katana and updated the Sound Blaster Connect Android app on my Android phone.

I was able to adjust the BlasterX Acoustic Engine audio effects and equalizer settings with the Sound Blaster Connect app.

Is there anyway to switch between the speaker output and earphone if one is plugged in? I'm interested in buying this but a earphone will be plugged into it most of the time.

If need to unplug/replug for speaker then is damn troublesome. :(

When a headphones is connected to the speaker, the speaker will mute and the audio will only output from the headphones.

There is no option to make the audio play from the speakers and not through the headphones when a headphones is connected to the speaker.

Bookfest? Interesting.

Unless your living room is compact, i.e. those in 3rm flats or smaller, then you can consider Katana. Otherwise, get a more apt sound bar system from HTS brands.

I've tried it on surround audio supported games, it seems reasonable for me.

It's not distinct such that you can figure out pacing/distance, but you can tell it's from the rear.

In general, unless a speaker system has actual rear speakers, it's generally not great for accurate surround sound purposes., let alone re-create any rear surround. Most just create a sense of surround. I've tried numerous sound bars and they generally fit this description.
