Can't believe I missed out on this thread till now, good review.

@techidiot, if my purpose is using it for PS4 gaming and movies/YouTube videos in a study room sized place, will the Katana be more appropriate or a 2.0 system like the Swans D1080-IV?

Katana definitely, Swans D1080 is a bookshelf design speaker meant for
music while Katana is a surround gaming speaker.
Since you are using PS4.
If you consider Swans you will have problem connecting PS4 to it
since there's no RCA out unlike PS3.
Katana wise just connect VIA optical from the PS4, remember
to set Dolby Digital and enjoy the surround gaming.

Alternate choice beside Katana will be Sony CT180 cheaper than the Katana at $399. (Now got CNY promo around $31X.)
Sony CT180 is a pure HTS soundbar but not for use with PC
You can compare these two see which suits.

Sony CT180 most electronic store you can demo but Katana either
Vivocity or Creative HQ.

Firstly Katana itself it's not a AVR, unlikely you can connect
to another subwoofer.
You can try but risk of Katana failing is high since the
internal amp have to tuned to handle that sub.

If you connect a much powerful sub, crossover, power handling
and etc. it may not work or worse start to crack.
Rather just get a cheap AVR if you intend to go something for
powerful.

Cheapest AVR + 5.1 will go around $1k (Both AVR and speaker.)

- My bad.. I just check the user guide it seems like is a passive subwoofer only.

It not a LFE output. if LFE maybe external active sub would be supported
