Crossroads in my Education

Good day All,

I'm a Diploma in Maritime Student (SP) with GPA 3.61.
I'm awaiting enlistment to police - 4th Nov

1st choice - Have applied for SMU Business Management - (3.72 10% percentile), rejected, appealed, rejected.

2nd & last resort - Wish to apply for SIM Business part time and work in a shipbrokering firm, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to juggle my time and work.

I don't intend to study overseas.
Please kindly advise sirs.

Did you try for NTU maritime studies? It has quite abit of business modules as well.

I didnt bother to try,
high GPA req and percentile and also im essentially re-learning everything that i've learnt, just a little harder.

entire bach program is essentially same as poly just a tad harder?
how do U know its a little harder?
if U were to enroll U assuming U can pass with GPA 3.5 or so.. with more effort not hard to get 2.1.
Weeding capable ppl out during admission.. hmm U saying value is like negative, essentially adding no value to grad.

i know because one of my lecturers there is a part-time NTU lecturer and we've been asking him qns from time to time regarding the degree at ntu , which is why i dare make such a bold statement, though i could be wrong from time to time.

in either case, i wont be considering NTU at all.

SIM as in uniSIM not SIMGE? Didn't some news on 2000 ppl applied. Going by your lecturer experience wouldn't uniSIM be easier? Since uni newer than NTU pretty much same system unlike SMU then no worries with regards not able to cope

i think that's a cross road since im considering to apply to other private institutions relating to business studies, just that im unable to make my decisions probably or that the modules related to it are not what i'm interested for (ie: Uni Wellongong or smth).

at the same time, im praying with all my might that SMU business somewhat accepts me for a 0.1 differential, which im not sure if others have faced before and got accepted (perharps, maybe someone could voice out and relate to me whether they applied for the same and got in?)

Firstly, try SMU again during your NS liability.

SIM UOL - full time or UNISIM part time/full time.
You'll need to compliment your business degree with other qualifications like SQP for accounting or CFA for IB.

Conventional wisdom suggests taking an accounting/business degree and clearing your SQP asap preferably on the first attempt if your able to secure a junior role at the big 4. Accounting/Auditing/Tax , take your pick, preferably accounting/auditing.From there, slowly build your portfolio and experience. After many years there, you can make associate manager beyond which, is another ballgame, won't elaborate it here. Its a good road if you work hard in school then.

If you want to take the challenge and top the school, try heading into the banking industry - front office. Clear your CFA 1 during your studies and the other 2 once you secured an appropriate position (if you can) at a bank. Start off as a junior consultant/analyst and work your way up there though this path is really arduous.

Which is why I think it would be important to find a part time job if your interested in part time studies that is pertinent to a career you want. Intern at an accounting firm perhaps. Leverage on the knowledge gained during your part time work on the industry practices there to have an edge over others

I noticed you mentioned an interest in shipbrokering. It seems like a really niche industry. I'm guessing its similar to a sales engineer i.e bidding for tenders and contracts for shipments/logistics/administration though you will only do all these if your a full time worker there as a graduate. Seems quite lucrative though i'm unfamiliar with how employment works in this field. I would expect however, the knowledge must be there. Things like international trade, maritime law, docking procedures, logistical operations must be there.

what the... a 0.1 difference is actually monumental. i consider even a 0.01 to be massive.

can consider studying logistics n supply chain management as well since it's related to maritime (correct me if i'm wrong). sim-rmit and unisim both have. I think curtin also got this course

yeah i got kinda unlucky i guessed . . at the last semester at that.

I intend to be a shipbroker for oil cargoes, and moving forward, going to be a trader in one of the oil major companies.

that has been my dream for the past 3 years. i was giving a small stint of what it feels like, and i think i will enjoy it. that being said, i wont change my passion for anything else.

ref to other posters, thank you for all your valuable advices. it is much appreciated as well.
Now moving on to re-re-re appeal for SMU !!
