hi there, i went down to CPA city campus that were in charge of allowing people to take professional exams. The person in charge told me that if students take the accounting and finance major from curtin singapore, they would be allowed to take cpa australia as the tax that would be taught to students would be in the australia format. Therefore, students can choose to register with the CPA australia and convert it into CPA singapore. It would be easier to convert. However, students would have another alternative to first take the professional exams to apply for CPA singapore. The person in charge also told me that the schools that is being accredited by ICPAS now may changed every year as there are increasing schools that are accredited every year. Curtin is one of the schools that is being accredited by CPA Australia. and who knows, curtin singapore may be accredited by ICPAS in a few yrs time as the system is changing every year? but, i do hope this information will help people who do want to take up accounting :)

CHEERS.

longyearbyen - thanks for enlightening.

kekelarz - how do the locals there rank the various unis in WA? UWA would have be to top, but what after that? I'm also keen to know about the psychology programs amongst ECU, Murdoch and Curtin, how do they rate?

UWA will def be top.

this would be debatable but this is my personal feelings *bias*

UWA > Curtin > Murdoch > ECU

i have a afew friends doing Psyc n Comm. double deg. wat type of psyc were u looking at?

U sure U not advertising? did U check your last few post?
BTW: U give ZERO info on American Degree. so if U really know do share your knowledge. else please save it and not comment.

U know afew students that are doing very well? whats very well?
getting GPA of 3.5 in Uni like UMICH-Dearborn or Flint mean jack S**t. U work with any of these kind of ppl?

why are U so concern how Uni are ranked in WA?
SG is smaller than WA, but boy.. ppl here tend to look beyond that.

some interesting and informative links to share to those who are much concerned with rankings..pretty relevant stuff as it evaluates on quality of DL from all 3 different reliable sources..

http://www.mbaguide.com.au/mba-rankings.php
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,,23163404-12332,00.html?from=public_rss
http://mba.eiu.com/index.asp?layout=view_article&eiu_article_id=1782965163

And for those of you who might be wondering why is there no mention of undergrad studies, thats because MBA rankings are usually taken as the benchmark for academic studies and therefore able to serve as a good guage of the rigour and standards for the faculty. Simply put, if a biz postgrad faculty does badly at the postgrad rankings..would anyone expect her undergrad programmes to be superior in quality? :o

finally! someone provides an ans to why MBA rankings is a good yard stick to use for undergrad Biz program.

here curtin ride high man! 5th ahead of UWA,
http://www.afrboss.com.au/mbaschool/

here curtin is ahead of Manchester, and ulu thunderbird

I know ranking is not everything. But it does offer something to begin with especially in the absence of other info. Perhaps good for preliminary short-listing. After that, I would love to hear especially first hand info of those who have studied in a Uni I am interested in, find out their experiences of the professors there, the school admin, the facilities, etc. What else should I look at?

But still, I am thinking, ultimately, when the recruiter looks at your degree and especially if it is one they are not familiar with, how do they evaluate that? Most probably, they would based it on some ranking they can find their hands on?

I wonder how many HR ppl actually go thru ranking.
or is the hiring manager getting the resume.
kena a alumni, great.
kena a local grad.. might not go so well.

if U dig around U find some ppl quoting what they know about HR.
eg:

if some pple poly GPA 1.8-2.0 also get admitted to Aussie Unis, then ask ANYONE what THEY think of the Aussie Uni standards??

AFAIK coming from my sis, a senior HR Manager with exp in both private & public sectors:

Private Sector
TIED 1) N. American University degrees (US/Canada)
TIED 1) UK University degrees
TIED 1)Singapore 'harvards' (NUS, NTU, SMU)

2) Australian degree (2nd, not bad mah?)
3) Distance-learning degree (Aussie, UK)
4) No degree

Singapore Public sector
1) MUST BE 'brand-name' LV, GUCCI, PRADAs of renown Universities
US: Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, USC, NYU, UPenn, CALTECH, MIT, Columbia...
Canada: UofBritishColumbia, UofToronto, UofAlberta, McGill, Waterloo, Queens
UK: Oxford, Cambridge, IMPERIAL College London, Manchester, Edinburgh
(Esp if you're from Oxford, Cambridge IMPERIAL College London, SG govt will treat you almost GOD-like/royalty liao, golden path paved)

2) Singapore 'harvards' (NUS, NTU, SMU)
3) Australian degree (must be Group of 8)
4) 3yrs Polytechnic Diploma (suprise suprise?! yes, it ranks higher than DL degree!)
4) Distance-learning degree = 'Toilet Paper' (sad but true)
5) No degree

ask a question that may seem laughable but had recently occured to me.

could curtin be consider on campus or DL, now that it has a campus in singapore?

if its considered DL, does it means that all campus except the main campus in bentley is considered DL?

If the above is true, how would u classify uni with multiple campus, like Monash...?

wat do u think?

i enquired last week and was surprised to hear that the Bachelor of Commerce degree can be had in 2 years.

First take the Diploma course (1 year), then go on to Year 2 of the Bachelor course. Then graduate!

I wonder how they can accelerate it in 2 years - compared to 3 years in Curtin campus in Sydney & Perth.

Anyone has any comments? thank you.:)

its fairly simple.

basically in a normal university year, you do 2 semester and a summer break ( school holidays)
what curtin do is that you, forgo the summer break and do an additional semester

hence you do 3 semester in a year, aka, a tri semester,
therefore you are able to complete 3 yrs work in 2 yrs.
work load is the same, just the difference in allocating time.

hope this helps.
