Dear all,

I need a recommended build for a Skylake or Haswell rig (either i3 or i5 based) which will be capable of photo editing using lightroom / adobe and some light gaming (e.g. dota and hearthstone). What would be a recommended monitor too? Budget is about $1000 (including monitor), but anything lower would great!

I do not require the Windows OS.

Thanks in advance to the bros here!

Ditch Skylake for older Haswell as much cheaper but offers similar performance.

Woah 1k with monitor is a bit tight, but I'll try:

CPU+MB: Intel i5-6400 + MSI B150M Bazooka - $423
RAM: Kingston DDR4 2133MHz ValueRAM - $88
GPU- use onboard
SSD: ADATA SX930 120GB - $99
PSU: FSP 450W 80+ HEXA PLUS - $58
Casing: CoolerMaster N200 - $61
Monitor: Dell P2314 23" 1080p monitor - $265

Total: $994

Prices referenced from PC Themes pricelist.

I used to play Dota2 with my onboard graphics and could barely get good fps at 1080p. That was before the move to Source 2 though so performance may be more optimised now. But I would still recommend at least an entry level graphics card.

Intel HD graphics 530 is already well overlapping in entry level discrete graphics.
