Cyber Security / Forensics Degree - Which degree?

Hi all,

I am currently studying Specialist Dip in Cyber-Sec Mgmt in SP. I am more inclined to the study of forensics and investigations (who knows if I have the chance to be part of the Cyber Security Agency ) At the moment I am looking at the degree programmes offered by PEI (Kaplan & PSB) and also SUSS...

Kaplan
- BSc in Cyber Security & Criminology or Mgmt (double major) by Murdoch

I don't see the modules offered in Cyber-Sec as in-depth. Although having second major in Criminology or Mgmt is like killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Criminology is more of theory based thinking cum research work. So I don't see it as an advantage in applying for a job in Cyber-Sec.

PSB
- BSc in Cyber Security by Edith Cowan Uni

One of 2 unis (another is Uni of Melbourne) funded by Aussie gov as part of its Academic Centres of Cyber Security Excellence (ACCSE) programme to focus on Cyber Security.

The modules offered by Edith Cowan are very in-depth and there are no exemptions for any Diploma IT related certifications. The only issue I am concern I have is whether the degree is recognised here especially in the government sector. Yeah, I've check MOM website for employment thingy (mainly for foreign talent but I'm a true-blue sg) but Edith Cowan is not listed lol.

SuSS
- BSc in Information & Communication Technology

Relatively new local Uni, modules offered generally focus on the aspects of infocomm. Nothing much on Cyber-Sec. Although I hate to think that having a local degree is better than Aussie / foreign ones.

Kaplan
- Bachelor of Science (Honours) Forensic Computing by University of Portsmouth

Modules offered focuses on Forensic and Investigations.

Don't ask me about NUS/NTU... Too high for me to reach lol. I hold a Dip in Infocomm from local poly and currently taking up CHFI and CEH certification. I'm a working adult... keeping the streets safe. Now my interest is keeping the 'online' safe.

Appreciate any advices or recommendations from you guys.

Consulted my managers at work, veterans in cyber security handles AP and ASEAN region, and they said "dont waste your time on degrees that wont be recognized, 16 months is nothing. It wont be recognized. 16 month would be for people like us(older), youre young take a local 4 years degree it will be done before u know it" 16 months refering to the course in kaplan murdoch.

So im going with suss, also its cheaper and ive checked the modules they got quite a number of cyber security option in the elective

I will think most will agree that SUSS ICT is the best among your list of degrees. Put aside local or not, it’s value have increased, the only question remains by how much?

In my opinion, you may also choose to go for Bsc Information Technology and Business (ERP) which is a direct honours degree. With more sweat comes with better harvest.

For other local universities offering part-time IT related degrees: NUS BTech Computing, NTU B.Eng in Computer Science

I see. What about Edith Cowan Uni by PSB Academy? No exemptions even for diploma holders. So I guess they strictly wants the students to go through the full 3 year Cyber-Sec degree course. Furthermore, as they are selected by Aussie gov as part of their Academic Centres of Cyber Security Excellence (ACCSE) program. You should take a look at the module-wise, it covers a lot of aspects in Cyber-Sec. But then again, I don’t many knows or have heard of Edith Cowan uni.

Can I know if you had proceed with Edith Cowan Uni? I am interested in Cybersecurity forensics as well.
