You don't really need one in SG.
Unless your location power supply keep getting interrupted.

You also don't need a fire extinguisher, first aid kit until you do...

I believe a UPS is needed. if u run a critical systems. black outs do happen and powertrips also.

and also doesn't mean u in SG u don't need it.

even NTUC uses it for them cashier system

Trust me, for home/personal use, UPS is an overkill.
Over the past 23 years of using the PC, I experience not more than 3 power outages.
I only recommended once to a client whose shop house is prone to power trips.

A UPS is like the battery of the laptop. Constant charging it to 100% w/o discharge will lead to a shorter life and lost the ability to hold the electrical charge longer than normal.

My fren copying file to NAS, power trip, all data gone. We only need one time power trip at the wrong time to wipe out all.

Copying should not cause any data lost. The source will definitely still be intact.
Unless your friend using "Move", then it will cause data lost from both source and destination.

That's why data backup should always have more than 1 copy.
Nothing to do with UPS.
