Data over Wifi ?

Recently found that my new mobile consume quite a lot of data.
Am I correct to say that once in a wifi environment, it will switch to wifi automatically ?
Is there any way to check if the mobile is currently using wifi or data ?

It will switch back to 3G/4G automatically when wifi connectivity is bad .
I think wifi is still 1st priority it gets data from .
If ya dun want incur extra 3G/4G data during wifi connection disable 3G/4G via toggle apps.
