Anyone visited Nikko? How was it like? Is the heritage pass worth buying?

Not really my cup of tea. Travelling time is long. (Can get the Tokyo Wide pass and do another 1 or 2 trips elsewhere and you will exceed the value of the pass.) I think i only bought the bus pass (1k or 1k+ yen), can't recall which one, at the JR Nikko station.

Maybe cos i went during summer, so found it hot and unenjoyable. Not much breeze, so super sweaty walking from place to place. :( V giddy also for me when taking the bus to the other areas as the road is super winding, i felt sick.

You might want to go weekdays, so it's less crowded and more enjoyable.

Will recommend to stay 1 night instead of day trip as it takes quite a bit of time to get there.

Day trip is do-able just gonna be a quite rush or don't see much

I found a number of place of interest to go in Nikko but not sure if there’s enough time. Anyone did a day trip mind sharing their itinerary?

I only went to futarasan shrine, toshogu shrine. Rinnoji shrine still renovating, so didn't go. Then had lunch around lake chuzenji and walked around short while only cos weather not good and gonna rain. The kegon waterfall didn't look impressive, so we didn't bother walking over either given the weather condition.

Took the first train from shinjuku at 7.30am and thought we need to take the last train back but in the end, we decided to leave around 2.30-3pm.

I did it before.. take the 7+ train from Shinjuku reach nikko just in time for everything to open.. if its a day trip, u need to decide either lake area or temples. cant do both in one day

I visited Kegon Falls and Chuzenji Lake 1st half.

2nd half took bus back down and walked towards Nikko Tosho Shrine, in 2014 they were doing refurbishment works on site + entry to the shrine is not very economical so I skipped the entry and just walked towards Nikko Futarasan Shrine instead and called it a day.

From Ueno it was about 2.5-3hrs 1 way. So transport to and flo is already 6hrs of travelling time. Time will be better spent if you stay 1 night.
